Engine swap

Post by Brojab »

I was thinking about doing an engine swap to my fiat spider 1984. Has anyone ever done or seen an engine swap on this specific car?

If you search the forum someone swapped in a V6. I think his handle was V6spider.

Rear wheel drive so its pretty straight forward if you have the transmission that matches the engine already. Mine has a 1.8L OHC Isuzu 4FB1 Turbo Diesel mated to a MSG5 transmission in it. Drive shaft had to be modified and the Guibo eliminated however they didn't get the speedometer hooked up but it works and gets about 40 mpg in the city. No computer with the mechanical belt driven injector pump so no ECU or control system tinkering was involved since the injector pump is bolted to the side of the engine and reacts the position of a mechanical valve built into it which is attached to the cable from the accelerator pedal. To run it needs just one wire to the fuel shut off valve in the IP plus the starter cables and radiator hoses hooked up along with the 3 wires on the alternator going to battery, warning light and field regulator.

it squeezed in there with just enough clearance at the firewall and radiator once the electric cooling fan was moved to in front of the radiator instead of behind it.
