1985 Azura Hi/low beam not working properly

Hello again, we have a 1985 azurra the previous owner bypassed the parking lights to a separate switch under dash( a tog-all) The selector on the column only turns the head lights low beams only. When turned all the way to front . The high beams work when you pull the Spector back towards you as in flashing the high beams. There is power at the fuses when tested with a test light . But not response to the head lights. The light switch on top of the steering column works and cancels as I have read. But not the hi/lo selector.

Should it only turn 1,2 or does also go up and down. This only turns but nothing up down.

Also looking for owners Manual if anyone has a copy.

rotating the headlight shaft toward you until there are 2 light symbols in view on the shaft is the only time the hi beams can be selected by moving the shaft downward.
Common failures of this switch are: the hi beam stop ( keeps the shaft from selecting hi beam) breaks from being forced when only one light symbol is in vies on the shaft. This is the parking light position with the ignition switch in the "on" position

The top rocker switch controls the parking lights when the ignition switch is in the "off" position. This switch gets canceled if the steering wheel is rotated either direction turning off the parking lights.

First turn is the position light. Second turn is headlight and on headlight only if you push down you have your highbeam. Push up before able to turn off. Also 2 relays under the glove box.

Hello sorry I didn’t see these replies from a year ago. But thanks for the response. The lever doesn’t go down easy or stay in that position. Someone mentioned that this a common problem . What is a simple fix or simply just order a new lever and switch.

I don't know of a simple fix. These switch assemblies have a few common failure points.
one is the wire connections to the switches are made through the plastic with a hollow rivet. These connections loosen over time and become intermittent.
The parking light switch at the top of the steering column contacts over heat to the point of melting the plastic that holds them. Once this occurs the contacts miss-align with the switch wiper and lo longer function.
The head light switch is constructed with a metal shaft and a plastic cam that operates the switch contacts when rotated.
The plastic cam cracks and slips on the splined metal shaft. The shaft then rotates but it does not rotate the cam to activate the switch contacts. This portion of the switch is riveted closed. not accessible.
The cam activates a small plastic stop for the hi/lo beam switch. That stop has to be released for the lever to move down to the hi beam position. Forcing the lever down often destroys the stop and can also destroy the cam.

I know of no source for the internal parts of these switch assemblies. It is very time consuming to work on them and close to 50 % of the time they can't be repaired because of lack of parts.

I don't know if any vendors supply new or used switch assemblies for the 83-85.5 Spiders
