Spider 2000 Exhaust System

My 81 Turbo has the cat converter, then a mid resonator, and finally a rear resonator (muffler). Has anyone tried to eliminate the middle resonator and what happened? Is there a need for both of these and if so what is the need? Thanks for any information anyone has. My mid-muff needs replaced and a friend suggested just taking it out and having a straight pipe custom fit to connect to the rear muffler. That is why I am asking for any feedback as it sounds like a good idea.

it will just make the exhaust note louder

Update:
I went ahead and took it to a muffler shop and for $23 they welded a piece of pipe in where the middle muffler was. I really cannot tell any difference in the noise level at all. It is my opinion that the middle muffler is not required. The replacement muffler from IAP was $96 plus shipping and installation.
