Gear Reduction Starters. Are they Worth It?

Post by FirstSpider »

It's become pretty apparent to me that either my starter or solenoid needs replacement (weird clicking sound when I try to start and nothing else happens) and I figured why not do both at the same time, you know, kill two birds with one stone. I've found used and working starters at just a bit over $50, and new ones for around $130, but I'm wondering about the gear reduction models. Is it worth it to shell out the extra cash for one? As I understand the stock starters are quite heavy and shedding weight can't hurt. Does anyone have one of these units installed? If so, do you notice any economical or performance gains? Pros? Cons?

The main benefit is that they are NEW. The original starter has not been available new in long time, so even the rebuilt ones are not necessarily that reliable.
Of course they also crank faster, use less current, and are lighter :-)
