Extra wire when hooking up gauge cluster

Post by rjkoop »

I'm putting the pieces back into my 1981 Fiat Spider. When re-installing the gauges everything went in well with the connectors and speedometer cable. There was a yellow/red stripe wire that I had to re-attach because the PO must have crimped it in the past and it came off when I removed the cluster. I soldered and covered in electrical tape. There was another wire that I'm not sure was attached to anything before. It is a yellow/black stripe while and the PO labeled it 'Sender'. I'm pretty sure that all gauges worked before I removed the cluster so any idea what that wire is for? 'Sender' sounds kind of important... :?

I was looking for the brad artigue wiring diagram to help out. However, I can't find it at the moment. It was at http://artigue.com. I have a hard copy of the wiring diagram from an 82' that i can look at over the weekend if i can find it. Darn...so use to being able to have info at fingertips.

Jay,
Thanks. I may pick that up on the weekend. I'll probably need to borrow your FI steel line bender tool as well. And maybe I'll bring over the FI line I was trying to flare and maybe you could show me what I was doing wrong. :(

Haha! Sorry. I'm keeping it. I'm pretty sure that wire wasn't hooked up to anything before. It still had electrical tape covering it up... but I will look for a matching color wire that isn't connected anywhere.

My 1981 Spider has a yellow wire with a red trace that connects to the speedometer. It is all by itself not in a connector. I believe it is the wire that makes the green "lights on" lite in the speedometer turn on when you parking or headlights are on.

If the wire came out of the speedo I think it might be the wire that activates a warning lighht when your lamdba sensor needs replacing - do you still have the motorised black box hidden in the L side of the dash ?. Chris

Not sure. Maybe it is the lambda sensor wire. I noticed that the light for the lambda sensor was removed as well. So maybe the PO got annoyed and removed both! And the fact that it had 'sender' written on it so maybe it makes sense.
