Ignition switch question, solenoid wire

Post by TulsaSpider »

I put my motor/tranny back in and I don't seem to have any power to my solenoid when the key is turned to the start position. My question is which wire on the back of the switch is the power to the solenoid? I think it's the red one.
2nd question. Does the wire go straight from the connector to the solenoid connector? I just have to figure out where the problem lies!

Just looking at a 78 diagram the #50 on the switch should be red and goes straight to the solenoid. Check power at the 50 switch terminal when you crank.

So I should be able to test the ignition switch by using a meter on the brown wire to red wire connection with the key on the start position. Yes?

If you have a test light its easier. Hook up the ground on the light and touch terminal 50 on the back of the switch and see if light comes on when you go to the start position. If you are using a meter then have a good ground for the meter ground wire and then place the positive lead from the meter on terminal 50 and crank to see if there is voltage present. Don't place the meter between the brown wire and the red wire.

Well if its out and not hooked up to any wires then you can put your meter on the Ohms setting and put one lead to 50 and the other to 30 and see if its connects.

Make sure the connection on the solenoid is on good. I know its hard to get on right the first time. Hard to see down there.

OK so the switch is good and I get home and figure out there is no power to the brown wire which is I believe supposed to be the power supply and the same wire that comes off the starter post which is a brown wire. So any Ideas why power is not being conducted? Is this a wire straight from the starter power post?? sheesh....

Brown wire goes to the ignition from starter however there are two connectors. I would check the connector on the left side coming from the starter. I usually is in pretty bad shape.

The link to where the manuals are seems to be down right now but I can email you them in PDF. What year?

That brown wire has a plastic connection in line. On mine it was burned up and I was having a voltage drop until I took it out.

I stripped the plastic connector off, the connections near the starter crimped new connections on and I'm back in business!
