Wipers going in the wrong direction

Post by LEWISDR »

The windshield wiper motor on my 72 124 Spider went bad so I replaced it with a spare motor I had. Now when I turn on the wipers they start out going downwards from the parked position before they go upwards.

Can I reverse the direction the motor turns? I have a picture of how the motor is wired. I would post it here if I knew how to do that.

Thanks

I don't know how that all works but it sounds like you installed it when the motor was in the upper position. I would remove the mechanism from the motor, turn on the motor, turn it off and reinstall the mechanism again.

The motor is a DC motor, so if it doesnt use the chassis for ground, it can be reversable.

Sounds like you just got the timing off. Just pull the motor while it's in the stopped position, then adjust the wipers to their stopped position, and reattach the motor. It may take some tweaking to get it just right.

+1 on the Park orientation of your linkage. That's likely your problem. Here's what your wiring should look like:

GRY/BLK - wiper power
GRY wiper Lo
BLU wiper Hi
BLU/BLK Wiper park
BLK wiper ground
BLU/WHT intermittent

Did you swap a motor from a newer Spider? Their wire colors are different.

This is a good photo of the wiring used in later Spiders. Early ones have a single rectangular connector similar to what you see behind the cluster. My post above refers to the '72 of the OP.
