95 Amp Alternator Case Bolts Loose

Post by deadhead »

I swapped in a 95 Amp Alternator from Allisons yesterday and today I noticed one of the case bolts was backed out about 2 inched and the others were loose.

Just wanted to give Mark, and others a heads up.

Best Regards,

I once lost a bolt out of an alternator case (not Mark's). Luckily I heard something go ping-ping-ping under the car and I stopped to investigate and even found the bolt. I suppose one more thing to put on the 'check before a trip' list.

Really. And after building a couple Harley's you'd have thought I would have squirted loctite on everything just out of habit.

It's a great Alt and solved a lot of issues. It even seems to rev better. I dug through the wads of reciepts the PO gave me and found where he'd put a smaller pulley on the old one to get it to keep the injectors lit at idle...and it would stall when the brakes were applied at anything below 2k rpm with the lights on. That problem was imediately resoved.

And as it goes with these things another issue quickly took it's place. Rod rattle. :( Dunno whether to do a reman short block myself or yank it an take to a shop...

Just thought you'd appreciate a heads up regarding the alt bolts.

Do it yourself. Better to F.. it up yourself than pay someone good money to do it :-)
But really, it's really hard to find a shop that pays attention to detail.
