Alternator pulley Resolved

Post by ga.spyder »

Hey guys, does anyone have a illustration or a disassembled alternator pulley assembly?I was replacing my alternator, and removed the pulley assembly(all 27 freakin' pieces),and carefully taped them together in the exact order they came off.Of course,I picked them up to install on the new alternator and the tape hadnt held and they landed all over the garage floor.I didnt think I would ever find the woodruff key!!!  Anyway,I tried to reassmble using my failing memory. After installation,it doesnt look like it is turning true.I may have to remove and wouild like to see if I have the proper sequence of washer ,spacers, fan blades, and pulley!!! Thanks
Craig

Thanks Jay.It is a very informative site.I saved it for when I can actually read all of it.It doesnt help with the Spider pulley assembly though. Our(at least my 82)pulleys are 2 piece and there are several different size and shaped spacers and washers. The shaft has a woodruf key that hold them intact.I had them all in order, and when they dropped.... :( I am not sure if I have them right or not,but something looks odd.The belt is in line and its charging, but it lokks to be wobbling a bit.Not sure,

Thanks Ralph. That is the same drawing I have. The pulley is a 2 piece with several spacers and washers.I thought I had them right but it is making some noise from the pulley area.I may go ahead and take it back out and reconfigure all the parts,to see if I can stumble onto the right combination!! :D I was so careful to take the components out in order, but the trip off the bench and onto the concrete.....

I don't have a diagram but have a couple alternators. What brand and part number is the one you have. If stock I think it should be a Bosch 65 amp.

I replaced my stock Bosch with a rebuilt(lifetime warranty!) from Autozone. It worked fine for a number of years. It was making some noise, although still charging.I took advantage of the warranty and got a new one. Then I dropped the whole pulley and spacer assembly on the floor! That is my stock pulley assly because the Zone units dont come with the pulley.

Dennis,I took the alt back out and experimented with differnt combos of spacers, and washers.I hit on one that seemed secure and spun freely.I went ahead and installed and all seems good.Belt lines up,no noise, and no wobbling. Is it right...I dunno but it works !! After I was done and took a ride I thought ''Hmmmm,I should have taken a pic of the sequence'' Too late now!!
