Installing new 95 amp alternator question(s)

Post by seabeelt »

Ok got the new alternator and am confused regarding the external voltage regulator and fuse L. I know that the external voltage regulator will not be used with the new alt as its regulator is internal and can be removed, but do I need to run a wire from the new alt output post to the orange wire that was attached to the external voltage regulator which runs to fuse L????

If not, does fuse L run anything else and can it be used for other circuits. I'm usually pretty good with wiring and associated diagrams, but this seems to be running in circles

The Haynes manual says that this is the voltage regulator and alt exciter circuit.

Also directions for the new alternator say to connect the green small wire to the bat light on the dash. Does this mean that I can skip the dash battery light relay and go direct, or does it mean that I should connect the green wire to the yellow wire that runs to the relay for the bat dash light?

My main concern here is that I don't damage the new alternator in any way

Thanks in advance for all of your more knowledgeable comments and help

Thanks Jay, I know it needs to be connected, just try to make sure it goes to the right place. Also for the directions it appears that the grey wire from the old alt gets abandoned.

Had a good Xmas. Got new KYBs, chrome dash rings, oil sending unit for gauge, tune up kit and fuel tank sending unit and shift boot of the correct color. :mrgreen:

Hi Jay how much was your shipping cost to Ontario for the alternator?

not sure as it was a Christmas gift (last year) from my amazing wife. I have never had an issue with http://www.autoricambi.us/ they always send by USPS and label "antique auto parts" which avoids the bullshit custom/brokerage fees etc :wink: I do know it was cheaper than buying a quality one here in Ottawa

Ok let's see if I understand correctly

Assumption is that the letters side of the fuse box is on the output side of the fuse or load side and that the numbered side of the fuse box is the power side or input side. ( true or false)?

Following the above assumption, pink or blue black wire comes from ignition switch to feed fuse L via terminal 10, output side of fuse L (orange wire) feeds external voltage regulator, pin 15; grey wire from external voltage regulator, pin 67, feeds back to old style alternator; further assumption, interpreting from Mark's post that both can be abandoned, as well as fuse L

Power for red battery charge light comes from pin 10 (opposite side of L) via blue/black wire to dash light; ground path for light is via black wire which goes to pin 30/51 of bat charge indicator relay. - relay looks to be normally closed from the diagram - with relay in the closed position and no input from the alternator, red light is on; with alternator spinning, producing power, the relay is energized via the yellow wire input (green wire from new alt) - red battery indicator circuit is interrupted and red light goes out;

bat charge relay abandoned and in this case, connect pins 85 and 30/51 together to complete the circuit and yellow wire from old alt connected to green wire of new alt.

New Alternator installed and producing a very nice constant 14.8v :mrgreen: :mrgreen:
