Cooling fan blue power wire issue?

Post by Fiat88 »

My cooling fan works but the blue wire only gets power when the ignition switch is on. Not sure why the PO did that but I traced the wiring and found the blue wire was not connected to fuse 10/L like the wiring diagram shows. Someone put an aftermarket 15 amp inline fuse which has the blue wire, a pink wire, going to the fuse and another wire(forgot the color) on the other side of the fuse. I'm wondering if I should hook up the blue wire back to fuse 10/L and try to restore the blue line to having power (hot) all times. I'm worried that the engine is gonna overheat if I keep it like he has now. What you guys think, is it a good idea to put it back to stock? Thanks.

The fan needs to keep running when you stop and the ignition is turned off, so it would be a really good idea to get this resolved. It draws a reasonable amount of power so just pay attention to where you pull the power from so the circuit is not overloaded. If the original fuse hasn't been mucked with that position would make a lot of sense. Not sure why the PO would have done that...?

Do you guys think it may be a better idea to run a new power wire coming from the alternator post with a new inline fuse?

Good question. That is usually saved for stuff like head/driving lights that need the highest voltage possible, to obtain brightest result possible. You need a high reliability connection for the fan, and the alternator, being attached to the engine, shakes (although hopefully only a little). I would think you could get good fan power elsewhere, but I will defer to others who have been through this as to where the best tap might be.

Yeah I have my headlight relays powered from there so I was wondering. Just gonna put it back to the stock fuse 10.

I installed a 6 fuse, fuse panel on the drivers side fender well near the brake booster. One of the fuses is for the fan. I think that is more reliable than the original fuse panel. The new fuse panel is fed with a # 10 wire direct from the alternator output.

Can you share what brand or P/N fuse panel you used? I see some of them in the auto parts stores but most look poor to me.

Success! Went over the wiring diagram and got the fan wiring hooked back to stock. Fan now goes on without the ignition switched on! Fan goes on when the needle hits the 0 of 190, seems right. :D Thanks guys.
