Divers - I don't think it matters if the wire comes from the battery or either the hot terminals on the starter or alternator as those are both fed directly from the battery.

whatever you do NEVER use red wire only..........................red wires are exclusively to be used on Ferrari's

Ok...still confused. My 81has the wire at the battery to the starter...BUT...dont I need a second wire from the starter to the key switch?

Yes, the wire from the starter to the keyswitch is needed to distribute the load over more copper. There was a very very good thread here awhile ago on this subject, in quite some detail, that can probably be found with the search engine. The basic idea is to pull as much load off of the ignition switch as possible, (headlights, wipers, etc) by using relays, and do the "brown" wire fix too.
