Can you name these items??

Pop quiz! I'm just starting to familiarize myself with the electronics in the car and I am not quite sure what these things are for necessarily. Perhaps, in your seemingly infinite wisdom, you may be able to help me identify their purposes.

1. I was reading about the Brown Wire Fix. It mentions a white connector after the wire comes through the firewall. Is this that connector? What does it do and can/should it be removed from the circuitry?

2. Similarly, is the red wire going to the solenoid in this picture really the Brown wire that they are referring to in the "Brown Wire Fix"? Is there anything wrong with this picture that I should know about? (My solenoid isn't clicking).


3. I found these two wires hanging out underneath the intake manifold and I'm not sure what they are for. Are they for the oil pressure sending unit? If they were and are unplugged, would that explain the low oil pressure light being on in the dashboard?




4. And lastly, that last position in the fusebox seems to have a wire leading into nowhere'sville...surprise surprise! What is that wire for?

#1. seems to be the brake switch.. It should be above the pedals..Should not be removed or your brake light will not work.

Well I wouldn't want that! Okay, there must be a different white connector that they are referring to for that fix, then.

2. No, that red wire is not the brown wire
The brown wire goes tothe large connector to the left of it (in the pic - actually it is above it).

3. Likely they are for an emission switch under the intake manifold. Not important unless you are in California.
The oil light switch is under the alternator on the back side. See if there is a wire connected to it. I would be very concerned by an oil light, and would make sure the engine actually has oil pressure before driving it.

Okay, thank you. I was unsure whether a PO had decided to do some re-wiring and disregarded the original wire color.

#4 do you mean the little red wire? on the right

To troubleshoot the starter solenoid not clicking put a test light on the red wire and turn the key to "start". If it's getting power you have a bad solenoid. If it's not getting power put the test light on the red wire at the back of your ignition switch (terminal #50) and turn the switch to "start". If you're not getting power you have a bad ignition switch. If you get power the line going from the ignition switch to the starter has a break or bad connection. If that's the problem, first check the condition of the connector on the pigtail coming off the back of the ignition switch.

Ron: Thank you, once things warm up here in Wisconsin, I'm going to go through that process. I will probably pull the intake manifold off for better access to everything.

haynes says the red wire is for the cig lighter
or a light undr the hood
but i may be wrong from time to time

Also, there is a button in my engine compartment which I do not have a picture of. It is a black button on the drivers side mounted on the wall of the engine bay, near all of the grounds. What is this for?

It´s the fast idle setting button. You have to depress it in order to set your fast idle. I got rid of it, with all the rest of the emmission control Stuff!

Okay, that is good to know. So if I haven't gotten rid of it yet, how does one go about setting their fast idle?

Also just found out that #3 is the set of wires that goes to the ignition mode sensor that switches the car from its starting points to its running points. I should check whether the car has been converted to single points or not.

1 set of points
or 2 sets

but i dont think thats what they are,"being under the intake"

The photo in the second link is exactly what I am referring to, whether they have correctly identified it or not, I have no idea.

Eventually it won't matter at all, though, because I plan on removing both the ignition points in favor of an electronic system and all of the smog equipment. That should clean up the bay a bit!
