Is it solid wood? If it weren't, I'd be afraid of lifting.
As for the design, not bad, even though my preference leans more toward original. Are you giving up your glove box?

The wood color, texture, character, etc.:
Since, we don't know what the wood will look like until it is finished, it is difficult to guess, and since lighting and contrast with the board that is lying on make it even more difficult to guess what the wood will look like, I can only say at this point that I do like the shimmering look of the wood.

The design touch with the lines:
My first impression was that it was a mistake, but after studying it more, I am guessing that the lines are an intentional design flare. I think it would go well for a modern car (or even a classic car) that has many other artistic design flares, but if everything else in the car has a classic conventional look, I believe the contrast would be too much for my taste.

The one-piece wood dash:
I have seen 1 one-piece dash that I really like, and probably you know which one I'm referring to: the one with a concave look, that has the instruments somewhat aligned toward the driver. It had a very nice simple, clean look, with rounded features that compliment the original classic design of the spider. I think there might have been an insignia to take up some of the broad expanse of wood on the passenger side, I don't remember. In a sense, you have a simple design here, with a design flare to break up some of the expanse of the unused area, so that gives it a plus, for my taste. However, for either of the designs, I would sorely miss the utility of the glovebox. I believe I'd like your design more, if it were 2-piece with a usable glovebox.

I give you an A+ for originality! I'd be very interested to see the look of the shimmering wood with a finish on it.

Is that a Beach or Birch laminate? The lines look good, inlayed? What kind of finish? darker or kept light to see if the "shimmer" is still maintained. A neibour was staining some Alder the other day, that had some neat grain in it as well.
Favorite to date though is the cherry with a number of coats of varnish.

Denise, this is a solid wood. Its been cut and the darker wood has been installed with glue and biscuts. Then it was cut to shape. Alvon, its just kind of a what if right now. An idea put to a test I guess. A glove box door could asely be cut into it if needed. Roy and I were looking at things the other day and discussing different ideas, or possibilities with the spiders wood dash. Trying to figure a way to customize it while still keeping it looking closer to what a spider should be I guess. He has some way out there ideas. Narfire, I think its gonna just get a clear. Thats how we did the cherry sets and teak sets .

I like it Rey! I like the one piece effect and the design in the wood. What kind of wood is it? Did it come in that color or did you alter it?

Personally, I don't like huge expanses of wood in cars. It's fine on a boat, or a treehouse, or a cabin. Small, tasteful touches of wood are a nice touch but wood cars went out with the advent of the industrial revolution and the discovery of metal :)

Rey, are you saying the strips are a darker wood? So, inlaid stripes for contrast. I thought the stripes were just cut into the wood. I like it better!....but I would still miss the glove box.

Denise, the glove box door can be cut into it at any time. This is just a what if thing right now. Its fully useable though. Mark, seems no one in your, never mind , to easy. You got to remember the center lights still need to be set in the middle, that will break it up some. Also i was thinking about setting some king of custom logo at the right lower corner on mine. As far as to much wood, all thats lost is the plastic frame in the middle.

The woods are quilted maple with black walnut. Its finished now and looks really good, need to get some new pics though. Might even go ahead and cut the door in seeing as how thats what most people seem to like.

I think that it will look good if finished to a high gloss. Reminds me of the inlay in a Roll's dash. Are you adding more gages? Here is mine before the clear coat is added and all of the extra gages. Did my dash and consoles in leather with a few more changes such has raking the radio console angle more vertical to add all the switches and idiot lights in one place. Please post the finished results.
