I am installing a center console cap and need some advice. Does the wood piece with the shift boot stay in its original position or should I remove it and put it on top of the cap after I glue the cap on? The problem is that if I leave it in place, it keeps the front of the cap from dropping down and lining up with the heater vents, and if I remove it the cap fits great but I will have to trim the wood piece to make it fit right and it has a metal base. Not going to be easy.
I know this much already...I should have read more here about them and ordered the fiberglass one from SoCal Mark! Too late now, sorry Mark. I didn't know about them until this morning when I started installation and searched the threads and it is already painted so not returnable.
Console cap help needed...and advice
Re: Console cap help needed...and advice
Jeff,
I also thought installing a cap would be straight forward, remove the console, glue on the cap, and re-install. Didn't work out that way for me either.
To get it to look and fit right I had to make some modifications to the original console. First remove the wood piece and boot. Once your done fitting the console cap it should fit right back where it was without causing a fit problem with the heater vents. I used a dremmel with a universal cutting bit (looks kind of like a drill bit) to shave off as much of the green foam and some of the plastic cover (of the console not the cap). It took removing allot of it to get the cap to lay perfectly over the console where you couldn't see the original console. You don't want any of the cap to stick up above the console or it will cause problems with the radio consoles fit. There's actually a metal frame inside of the console to use as a guide, so don't be afraid to go to town on the green stuff just remember to leave a good amount of the original plastic on the outside or you'll have nothing to glue the cap to.
I wouldn't cut the wood panel. Like you said it has a metal backing. The front lip of that backing sits on the front ledge of the console. Without it the wood will sag down onto the top of the trans housing.
Take your time and you can make that cap look good at a fraction of the price.
Hope this helps.

Re: Console cap help needed...and advice
Thanks Rick, that's what I'll do. I went ahead and removed the wood shifter piece and glued the cap on, but it is only silicone so I'll take it back off, clean up the silcone, and start trimming the old console. I am also going to have to cut some of the metal out of the original where the fan indicator goes. I cut the square hole but it won't go in right because of the way the clear plastic piece fits that hooks up to the fiber optic light. I would have left it out had I examined it in the first place and looked at how it would go back in. I noticed you don't have it in yours.
You guys that have been through this can stop laughing now.
Thanks for the help,
Jeff

Yea I decided to leave mine clean without a hole for the fan switch. I didn't cut a hole in the dash cap for the headlight switch either. All of the switches are going to stealth mount under the left side of the dash. You'll find there are a couple of other places on the cap you may have to trim. Mine was a little tight around the heater controls so I had to shave it a little.

Those switches are for power windows. If you don't have power windows, you put these in the holes.
