Interior – Before & After

Post by Foster48x »

The interior on my 80 FI is finally getting close to completion. I still need to cover the seats, armrests, visors, and find (or make) some nice floor mats. Other than that it just needs some small items replaced or painted. I know how much you guys/gals love pics so here’s some before and after shots of the work done to date.

Here’s what it looked like when I purchased it in June of 09’

And now…

Here’s some more.

Wow! Complete color change! Looks very nice. Great job! Congratulations!

Can you provide more details?

Is that a new dash or you recovered the old one?

Is the instrument cover metal or laminated? or something you bought from a vendor? Did you document the change with photos? Look at that clock!

Did you buy a carpet set or made your own?

Those side pockets look new!

Great work!

Here are some of the details… and pics (that amsiegel cant see :D )

The dash, radio and center console are replacement caps from Vicks Autosports. Took a good amount of work to get them perfect but they came out looking like a nice replacement dash rather than caps.

The dash panels are brushed aluminum. I really liked the way Trey’s (htchevii) came out so I decided to do one. I cut the templates from thin gauge aluminum I picked up at Ace Hardware. It also turned out to be an enormous amount of work. All of the panels and glove box had to be re-sized due to the dash cap. I love the look and get allot of compliments on it (even my wife said something nice about it). The pininfarina emblem came off of a Ferrari that my buddy picked up while in Europe.

I custom cut my own carpet. Here’s a link to my carpet post.

The side pockets were used but in good condition. I cleaned them up and replaced the silver trim with generic replacement side molding from Pep Boys. Looks just like the original. The side pockets looked so good I didn’t want to cut holes for the speakers in them. The reason the front speakers ended up in the doors.

Thanks for the compliments.

Looks good, what color is that? It looks different in each pic. Steel gray, taupe, or warm gray? cant tell.
That is the same script that was on the side of the Cadillac Allante fenders.

Sorry for the poor quality pics, they were taken in low light. I'll try to take some better pics during the day.

The dash panels are unpainted brushed aluminum with a clear coat.
All of the vinyl is black Whisper Vinyl (looks allot like leather) from JoAnn Fabrics.

I'm also curious about the glare, I've thought about getting a 12"x10' roll of aluminum from a local hardware store for months but have always been worried about the glare due to the constant sun shine here

The aluminum is brushed so the glare is minimum. Here are some pics of it in better light.

Very nice work...but I prefer personally the first pic of the car prior (IMHO), if the original tan interior was spruced up and new carpets along with the new dash cap you'd have a super looking interior. Are those seatcovers over the original seats? How does the seatbelts stay on without the seat belt guides on the back of the seats?
