bumperettes

Post by azygoustoyou »

Can someone give me a pic of their bumperettes on their car. I need a front and side view. Not to far away so I can see the way they fit on the car. I'm going to attempt a steel bumperette that I can be painted. If I get the pic soon. I'll try to make it this week. Thx

Thanks for the pics.
I was hoping to get some pics of the bumperettes like they sell of the abarth ones. Yours might sit just a liitle different since you modified them. Don't get me wrong. They look good. I need to know if the fronts are vertically level in the front and how the top and bottom are against the car.

I doubt these will help you since it's on an early bumper car:

Those do help. With the pics from Chris and yours. I get the idea of how they look. I think I might just make the bumperettes out of urethane rubber though. I'm looking into the mold now.

Now that I'm working on the shape. I'm realizing the angle on the front inside is different than the angle on the outside. When the bumperettes fit on the cars. Are they flush on both sides ? I mean no gap. I'm going put one together out of foam with the two different angles and see how the fit works.

I believe the two front ones I have are the same. My mounting arms need to be modified to get them to sit flush. What you see in my photo is the gap due to the arms being too long.

Okay here's what I came up with. I'm planning on putting them in the area like the car on the forum under euro license plate.

I made my own design which is going to be wider and closer to the body of the car. I still have to sand it. It will have the edges like the abarth bumpers. I'm not sure if I'm going to make them out of urethane rubber or fiberglass yet. I did check and they seem like they could be put in the area where the holes are for the bumpers. Either way, I'm looking into making a mold to possibly do more if people are interested. I'll work on the backs as soon as the front is finished.

Denise,

They came off a 76 Triumph Spitfire we found a Pick and Pull. I cut off the rubber bumpers as close to the rackets with a saw zall, then used ABS pipe to fit them in the holes left by the pistons. Lots of carving and sanding to get the fit right. My daughter did most of that.

Nice!

While you are pouring the urethane you might think about putting
ABS pipe stubs while drying, I think we used 1" and 1/2 its almost a perfect fit for the big bumper cars.

Here's some pic's of one finished bumperette for the front passenger side. As you can see. I'm putting it closer to the center. It would look pretty cool with Marks turn signal kit .

As you can see here. It won't work on the drivers side. There is a gap on the back bottom. The back has to be on a slight angle toward the inside of the car to fit tightly on both sides.

I looked into making molds so I could reproduce some of these bumperettes. I figured it would cost me $250. which would give me enough product to make a mold of each bumperette since the angles are a little off with each one. I would also have enough product to make myself a set.
I then thought. What would it cost me to make another set for someone else now that I have the molds? It still would cost a little over $100.00. I then thought. What would someone pay for a set? Maybe $200.00 if they like them. I am so particular to design and craftsmanship. I would go bald . Maybe it wouldn't be worth it.
Anyway, I figured I would just seal these with fiberglass and cover them with carbon fiber twill weave. I'll give pics as soon as I get the first rear done. I'm making the backs wider than the front. The backs will go over the bumper holes. Plus cover the seam and screws holding the lower fender on. They look really good!
