Looks more like the Opel Speedster (aka Vauxhall VX220/Saturn Sky) to me.

All I can tell you is that new cars are losing their soul. Hard to tell who the manufacture of most cars are by the look anymore. Thank God they put large stickers on so we can tell.

I don't know. A Porsche 911 is still pretty recognizable.

And the 911 is only 45 years old, go figure. Instead, Abarth is putting out Tron-lightcycles.
Re: New Spider Abarth or a Lotus Elise?
What I can't figure out is will this be a Fiat spider with an Abarth version or is it straight from Abarth?
Also it says these renderings are complete speculation... fingers crossed for a design based on the original abarths

I agree, I work at a Toyota, Honda, Mazda Dealership in the parts dept. I really can't get too excited about any new cars we sell, except maybe the s2000. They are all so boring, but old cars get me excited. I can't imagine any of todays cars being around in 20-30 years all the plastic crap is going to disinigrate.pope wrote:All I can tell you is that new cars are losing their soul. the s2000 is the only affordable modern "sports" car that has potential to be a classic.
The Miata might make money for Mazda, but lets be honest.... its crap.
Not crap from a function perspective, I'll grant that. Functionally it is brilliant, but from an "everything else" perspective, the Miata falls short. Its a Japanese copy of a cross between an MGB and a Fiat Spider.
Nice try fellas, but you didn't hit the mark on either of the targets... lol good thing the world has a bunch of secretaries, or your sales figures would not look very good at all.. lol
The s2000 is the best car Japan has ever produced in my opinion. I don't own one, but certainly will someday.
Think about it, this is the first "new" body style they have actually come up with on their own, and it is fantastic.
The first car where it doesn't look like they are just trying to copy someone else's work.
The s2000 will become legend for that aspect alone.. lol
meh, enough rambling for now....
I'm sure I will see something worth rambling about again soon enough.
lol

Re: New Spider Abarth or a Lotus Elise?
I'll agree the S2000 is a very cool car, but even though you hate the Miata, Mazda reinvigorated the sports car market with that car. It was the first convertible sports car to combine reliability with the sports car image. Mazda deserves credit for creating a car that appealed to the masses and opened their eyes to the sports car world. I feel this has a lot to do with the renewed interest in the Fiat Spider

Re: New Spider Abarth or a Lotus Elise?
I think I lean toward Mark on this one, for a couple of reasons.
1. Most people just don't buy hot rods. It may be the extreme cars that get all the press (extremely fast, extremely luxurious, extremely fuel efficient, etc.), but those cars are also usually extremely expensive. The majority of us want a car that meets a particular need. Family? Minivan. Work? Truck. The Miata really caught on with people looking for a fun car that's fun to drive. Very few of us ever buy a car because it will go 120 miles per hour. But a lot of us have been willing to buy a small convertible to zip around town in.
2. While the S2000 may become a classic in the way the Corvette Stingray is a classic, the Miata has a better chance of becoming a classic like the Mustang has become a classic. If you go back and look at some of their early print ads, Ford was selling '65 through '67 Mustangs, not just as muscle cars, but as fun to drive, youthful, zip-around-town cars, and before they started veering toward the true muscle market (which I think you really start to see in the '68), they sold these cars to secretaries. By 1985 (20 years later) the '65 Mustang was a classic. This summer the Miata will be 20, and I think you see a lot of the same thing. Lots of them still on the road, some stock, some highly modified, and despite their middle-of-the-road engineering, a lot of people still love to zip around town in their small convertibles.

Re: New Spider Abarth or a Lotus Elise?
I agree with all thats said. You have to give BMW some credit with their Z3 that was a blip on the screen for about a year.
BUT...when it comes down to it, who really wants to own a Miata? Its a rolling jelly bean. Like Mark said, I give it credit, but I would never buy one. You cant look good in that car, unless you are a chick or chicklike.

Fiat closed out abarth years ago its just a name from the past now sadly ! and they
are using it to cash in on the sports car fans who remember the name .
