AS Spider gear shift lever gaiter & cover

I have bought an early rubber gaiter and plastic surround which was to advance restoration of my 1967 AS Spider interior.
When I lifted the carpet it became obvious that the parts wouldn't fit.
Did the early cars fitted with a four speed gearbox have a different (shorter) cutout for the shift lever? Mine now has a five speed and maybe the cutout has been enlarged?
