Pesto's last dance :(

Post by 70spider »

Well Pesto is down for the count. I must have done something two days ago when driving him a little spirited, I think I lost the head gasket and created one serious oil leak (a bleeder somewhere). Well he is not drive-able even though he starts and idles great but looks like Mount Vesuvius out the tail pipe. As most of you know I have been slowly trying to build a 1608 for him, currently waiting on the machine shop to finish the block, but with this new chain of events I am thinking of doing a budget rebuild of the 1438. I have the 1608 head (which is ported and polished and has big valves), new Borgo 66.5872 pistons, and new stock cams. I could hone the bores myself, get the necessary gaskets and bearings for around $500 and build it by the end of the summer. Whereas, if I wait a year I can finish the 1608. My problem is I am currently unemployed and the company I worked for said they would bring me back in March, didn't come true, so I have to wait until August now for work. I will pull the 1438 next week, weather permitting, and check the clearances and measure the bores to see if I can just hone it.
It is a bummer I can not drive him, since getting him 2 yrs ago (03/10/2014) we have enjoyed 9,000 miles together. Excerpts from my last drive.

Bummer about the employment situation. Hope something comes up before the summer.
My opinion:

I'd pull the head, drain the block, swap head gaskets, put back together and then flush the whole system . ( heater on)
Cheap fix that should get you up and running after a morning of wrenching. When the $$$ permit continue with the 1608.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. BTW, that right on red AFTER A FULL STOP stop in the video didn't seem much like a stop. Do you live somewhere where that's legal. Not judging, just asking asI don't pretend to know Canadian law. :D

Ha! No way you were at 5mph in first, more like 20mph in 2nd!
But now you removed all evidence!
No worries, Spider aficionados on this forum unlikely to report you to the authorities.

Sorry to hear about your head gasket. He was riding so well. Hope you can get it all straightened out or get that other motor in pronto.
