So lucky!!!!

Post by wizard124 »

I had just picked up my son from school.. Down at the first stop light, behind a Prius.. Stopped.

The Prius goes in reverse and hits me just as I am laying on the air horn.. Lucky, no damage! Just enough clearance with my pushed in front bumper and didn't hit my hood.

The Spider is a car that you always must assume is invisible to other drivers.

That was a close call. It would be a horrible shame to see your Spider damaged after all the work you put into her. Your situation is one of the reasons that I've not gone bumper-less.

Glad to hear there was no damage Warren.
What I am wondering is why did the Prius go in reverse to begin with?
Don't know how to drive stick on a hill?
Thought "R' was for race?
I would assume they had a wet drivers seat after that air horn blast.
Hope they apologized profusely and at least offered to buy you a beer (or even better, a case)
+1 for the bumpers

Of course I jumped out and expected to see the front of the hood creased. She gets out of the Prius ....said she couldn't see me (although I had a clear view of the driver side mirror). I don't think her reverse lights worked either or I would have honked a bit sooner. She decided she needed to turn left but needed to back up to clear a pedestrian island.....

It could have turned really ugly........to see a grown man cry like that

Wonder how the bumpers would have performed, had they been tightened in closer to the body, with a bolt to secure them in place, as I have seen often done here. Just curious if they still have any reflexive action after that modification? I suppose the bolt would shear pretty easily, and then there might still be some action left in the bumper shocks? Using a nice soft bolt, to act like a shear pin, would be advised in this mod I think. :?:

Wouldn't work the way you describe as you drain all the fluid out to tuck them. Absent the "set screw" holding them in position they slide pretty easily; no shock effect left at all. Therefore the biggest hardest bolt or screw is a better idea.

Got it. Thanks. Not taking mine off.

Just curious, is it possible to drain just part of the fluid? To retain some of the shock action?

This is why I won't be removing my tube bumpers. I am considering the bumper tuck, and it's good to know that they do afford at least some protection when tucked. I think that's a good compromise between aesthetics and protection from at least some slow-rolling impacts. (Ain't gonna help you when a lifted pickup truck and its trailer hitch make a nice crease between your hood bumps.)
