Spider monogamy

Post by cyborg7 »

While I love my Fiat spider, I'm finding that for the 2nd time in 6 months I'm having impure thoughts about swapping it in for a lancia fulvia coupe. If I had the money and space I'd have both, but unfortunately it's one or the other. There's lots of downsides to the lancia and I know I'd probably end up kicking myself if I did.

The 'against' list is currently outweighing making any such change...leaf springs, front wheel drive, risky mounting connections, not open top, less bhp.

But rational decision making has never been my strong point. Has any one gone through this and got any suggestions to resist what risks being an expensive mistake.

I knew a guy that did that ~10 years ago. He loved the Fulvia and had it for many years. Eventually he got something else with more HP.

Take a few moments and Just think about how much easier it is to get parts for the Fiat. If you are looking for a car that will do everything better than the Fiat consider an Alfa.

Your comments seem to contradict in a way. Is that what you meant to say? Debate-able in any event.

I had a knee replaced last year, and was unable to drive my Spider for an extended period. I had previously considered selling my car and starting another project, but after that experience, I now claim I will never be without a vintage roadster. There's something about that driving experience which is unique and irreplaceable.

If I were blessed with the space, I would buy it and play around with both.

I just looked up the specs for the Lancia Fulvia coupe. The Fiat specs are similar so going from it to the Lancia would be a lateral move with regard to performance. So my comparison with the Alfa amounted to a non sequitur. My mistake. But I still give a hearty thumbs up to the Alfa coupe. :!: If you haven't driven a GTV you owe it to yourself to do so. Besides, they look stunning from any angle.

unfortunately I'm not, but I have a plan... I've resolved not to get rid of the spider - it would break my heart and be a seriously bad move. But instead I'm going to beg, steal or borrow a garage and find a way. Off to see a fulvia on saturday so I've see what it's like, but after all the soul-searching I've vowed that it won't be a replacement.

The older I get, the more I think about this. I've had my spider for 20 years. When I bought it I had no issues wrenching on it myself. Unfortunately the older I get, the harder it gets. And if I have to pay another to work on it, I might as well have a Boxster.

If I had my druthers, my garage would have one or more of each of the following:

Spider
Alpha
TR6
TR2
240Z
280SL
MG Midget
Isetta
late 60's big 'ol MUSTANG

and an X1/9. 1974

That would be a start anyway.

Don't get me wrong, I love my FIAT. FIAT's are relatively affordable great looking and fun to drive. But the Fulvia is historically a more important car as far as Italian cars go. As a kid I remember trips to Italy where two of my uncles had one. One was a grey/silver/blue and the other was a navy blue.

If I had to choose between the two cars for the same price I think I would choose the Fulvia as much as I love my Spider.

Just wanted to say congratulations on getting the Lancia while keeping your Fiat. I've bought and sold a lot of cars and the only one I regretted selling was my first Spider. I enjoyed the humor/humour of your post...Spider monogamy...impure thoughts..

Enjoy!
