Heater pipe support

Post by zachmac »

My old heater pipe (the one that runs under the exhaust header from the water pump to the firewall) had a little hook bracket that helped support it. The replacement stainless one has nothing. Anyone come up with a simple / clever substitute? Doesn't seem like the kind of thing I should just leave hanging.

there are a variety of electrical conduit clamps. I'm thinking automotive harness holders. check them out at your auto store. You can also use plumbers strap and bend your own.

Yeah, I was thinking pipe strapping as well but want to investigate something more rigid first. Really need to secure it in both up and down directions and pipe strapping is really just for the latter.

Send it back to whoever made it and ask why in the heck they made the part wrong!

That would make sense IF anyone was offering one that does have the support tab.

Pitiful. So the only part made is being made wrong. Sounds like an opportunity to provide a better part for some vendor.

Surprised the pipe comes without the bracket. Given the way these tend to dog ear at the connection with the water pump presumably from flexing over years and thin metal, I think some type of clamp with rubber to absorb some of the vibration is a great idea and not too expensive. The Adel Clamp listed by Spider2081 at the right size would be a good replacement that I would use.

To be fair, Midwest Bayless does offer one version with the bracket, but only the version with the extra nipple I don't need on my carbureted car. Why the versions without the nipple from Bayless as well as AR and Allison don't have the bracket is a mystery to me?

I had to make one also. The one that came on the engine did not allow my new heater pipe to bolt up properly (the two bolt flange to waterpump angle was wrong).

I fear the rubber on the Adel clamp would not survive the heat.

You could replace the rubber with a short piece of silicone hose, split lengthwise.

The info below was taken from Stockwell Elastomerics:

http://elastomerics-blog.stockwell.com/ ... -range.htm

(Neoprene would be likely to fail, being in thermal contact with the exhaust stud. Silicone looks good):

General Operating Temperatures for Common Materials*
Urethane: less than 250°F (121°C)

Natural Rubber: less than 250°F (121°C)

Chloroprene (Neoprene): less than 300°F (149°C)

Nitrile (Buna-N): less than 300°F (149°C)

EPDM: less than 400°F (204°C)

Fluorosilicone: 400 – 500°F (204 – 260°C)

Fluorocarbon: 400 – 500°F (204 – 260°C)

Silicone: 400 – 500°F (204 – 260°C)
*Temperatures are general, values will vary with grade. Refer to specific specifications for actual product temperature ratings.
