Hello all, I have a 84 Pinanfarina and am considering replacing the stock main cold air intake hose with on from VAS or Allison automotive. I like the sleek look of the aluminum instead of the ugly ribbed stock one. I notice the one from VAS includes a cone filter and the one from Allison's uses the stock filter box. I would rather use the cone filter with my airflow meter. I reside in CA so I presume that I will have to switch back to the stock for smog checks.
All experiences and suggestion welcome..

You can drill a bunch of holes in the bottom of the stock air box and on the side facing the fender well. Should give same performance as a cone filter but with a stealth advantage.

Re: Fi cold air intake
Thanks guys, I guess what I was looking for was to change the look of the engine bay. I like the look of the aluminum intake pipe over the stock ribbed plastic intake. I guess I have to much time on my hands and am creating work for myself.

Be aware that there is a lot of myth to what K&N filters can provide and can't...you're not likely to gain more of anything from them but a filter you can re-use, which is nice. Cone filters in an open engine bay are just sucking in a bunch of exhaust heat and dirt, amplified by the lack of any shielding on the bottom of the cars as most owners don't have the shields installed. The home-made airbox with the cone and hole cut in the car may be the only sensible way to achieve using the filters, but then you're going to through a lot of effort to isolate 3/4 of the cone filter you bought to begin with.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Bosch airbox, and you can drill it if you are convinced it will make additional flow. The restriction is the AFM though, not the airbox or hose. The airbox was used even when a supercharger (and carbureter) were used on the Volumex...and the VX air hose looks better than the plan old FIAT one.
If you go with a solid metal pipe keep in mind you need some flex points or it will destroy things. It has to flex where it meets the throttle body and it has to flex at the AFM. Not hard to do with large rubber hoses in kind of an Alfa Romeo Spider fashion (rubber hoses connecting the plenum to the runners).
