Undercoat painted?

I'm restoring a 1970 Spider. The inner fenders are undercoated, which I assume was done at the factory?

What I can't tell is if the undercoating was then painted, or left black. Right now its just a dirty mud brown. Any help is appreciated.

Mine were also "dirty mud brown", so that may be the actual color. you could tell by grinding some away to see if the color remains. I degreased mine and brush painted it with rustoleum black enamel. Came out looking swell

My understanding is that all undercoat was dealer applied. When cleaning up my wheel arches, the undercoat was over the original paint. Hope that helps.

Mine is also over original color. Chassis black or such is certainly cheaper than PPG Concept. Good to know. Thanks for the help.

Finishmasters carries a "smart" brand qt sized undercoat in rattlecan. I use it all the time, its a great product! Covers easily, paintable, looks clean too. For ~10 bucks a can, you should try it. tip: keep a piece of cardboard in your other hand as a "shield" like a stencil for edges. Saves a bunch of masking time in the easy spots.
