I could not find a post where it showed the how to on moving the bumpers in on the 73 model so I took some pics along the way. I also wanted to remove the overriders.

To start I removed the two nuts on the bumper bracket and the small nut and bolt that hold the bracket near the plate light. This small bracket bolt and nuts were rusty and small and broke but I had other plans for the whole anyways. I then slide the post on the side of the bumper out of the grommet and the bumper was off.

On the left side, sorry wasnt taking pics, there is a round metal spacer with a nut at the bottom of it that screwed on a threaded stud the held the bumper bracket to the car. On the right side this same round bushing had no nut but two slots where special FIAT tool was needed. But like all great Fiat mechanics I improvised and used my pickle fork and pry par. I did flatten the forks to fit in the slots better. I used some, ok lots of penetrating oil along the way.

Once I got the threaded bushings to screw out the bumper mount comes right off then there is a rubber spacer. I didnt know how much I needed to go in so I took a shot and used a hack saw to cut the first portion of the rubber block off. Test fitted it with the bracket and bumper and was just about perfect. now the problem is the stud is not treaded all the way down. So I got some pipe that would fit inside the hole of the bracket and cut it to 1 1/2 inches Re test fitted and the round threaded bushing bottomed out before I liked how tight the braket was held. So I removed and added a few mag nut washers then the spacer I cut and the threaded bushing again and had success. A new grommet for the post on the side mount, a few fender washers between the bumper and mount to set the spacing right where I wanted.

Last there are brackets the go by the plate lights and attached with small bolt and nut to tab with hole on body. The best option was to cut the bracket where it curved making it flush with the back of the bumper. I then installed a rubber push thrugh style bumper into hole in body for the bracket to rest on. Worked perfectly and it it was done.

I removed the overriders and then found some 1/4 carriage bolts to fill the hole. I used a hammer on two of the to faces to bend them down slightly to be more curved for the bumper. I then sanded then polished the heads of the bolts. Used some flat washers on the inside and tighten them down. I will need to get the bumpers rechromed at some point but I like the look alot better now.

I like those bumpers, I think they would look good on my 80 :mrgreen:

I left the rear bumper holes open so i could install some kinda bumper in the rear .... I welded the front bumper holes up and deleted it...

If your going no front bumper I think the Abarth style bumperettes would look good on there. Everytime I see your paint I wish I was closer and pay you so spray some cars for me :)

Slospider,

I also have a 1973 and I am having trouble with one of the bumper studs. On the picture of the right stud, I cannot quite see how it is mounted to the body. Is this welded?

I see your picture now and yes they are welded to the body. You could get a bolt and weld to the body again or cut the head off the bolt if you want it more factory looking. Is the inner bushing rusted to the inside of the bumper bracket still? If so you may be able to reuse with a new washer and nut once the stud is replaced.

The studs are welded to the body. Are you trying to take the bumper mount off? It will either have a nut inside or two slots on the edge of the inner bushing that screws on the stud.

I'm simply trying to repair a rusted out mount. I will need to get a new bracket or weld some new metal onto my old one - that's the easy part. The more difficult task will be to put a new stud onto the body. I think I will probably cut whats left of the old one off and then drill and tap for some all-thread, screw it in a bit and then weld to the body.

I think you may find that after you cut off the old stud the metal will not be thick enough to make any threads for an all stud type repair. I would see of you can use a dremel and cut off the old stud and then grind down any remaining rust and smooth out to have a new bolt welded on. If you don't weld Im sure a muffler shop or welder would only charge about 20 bucks to do the whole job for you.

I was thinking of putting a fillet weld around the base so I'd need the threads just for good alignment and electrical contact for the welding. I have a cheap Harbor Freight welder that should do the job okay. Once I get into this, I'll post a complete write up to supplement your excellent original post.
