Show Your In-Car Tool Kit

Post by jimmycakes401 »

I was trying to decide where to post this and since everyone will be different, I chose "custom stuff."

My car recently broke down and I realized I should put a "kit" together. Obviously there is the one that came stock with the car, which I actually still have and need to put BACK into the car. But let's see some pics or see some lists. My immediate thought is:

Spare set of mm sockets
Adjustable Wrench
Fuses
Screw Drivers
Needle Nose Plyers
Extinguisher
Multimeter

Mine did 2 years ago. I was in the middle of nowhere. The tow was (flat bed) $268.00. The next day I called the insurance company and added towing to the FIAT. Have 3 other cars and they all have towing!

I've got towing covered. AAA Plus.

What was your Fiat's problem during the "middle of nowhere" fiasco?

I have a flat head screwdriver, a fire extinguisher, and an extra set of points and condensers. My spider doesn't make it far enough from home for me to worry about anything. I have friends with trailers and trucks.

Jimmy, In addition to the parts you listed, I also carry the following in my daily driver: 2 feet of fuel hose, spare fan belt, spare electronic ignition components, zip ties, hose clamps, (2) 12" lengths of wire with alligator clips on each end and about 5 feet of electrical wire, a few feet of steel wire, and a 32oz gatorade bottle filled with water.

This seams like a lot of stuff, but it all fits in a small tool bag slightly bigger than the original tool kit, or in the spare tire compartment. There is not much on a Fiat that can't be fixed on the side of the road unless its a major mechanical problem. In 6 years of daily driving I've only had to use the zip ties and some of the electrical wire for the most minor of problems. The zip tie was when one of the rubber muffler hangers broke and the muffler was banging side to side. I was never a boy scout, but I like to be prepared for anything.

A lot of good ideas. I assume everyone carries jumper cables and a wrench to get the battery cover off.

This is what gets carried for the AC Coupe for 3-5 day tarmac rally events.
Thankfully most of it is carried by the support crew, but we carry a basic tool kit and some easy to fix repair/replace stuff in the car as well.
Bottom right, wrapped in plastic is the spare gearbox, there's also a spare diff, axles, starter motor and alternator in there somewhere.

For me it is primarily a few basic tools, like pliers and wrench, plus jumper cables, and my torque wrench with the socket for the wheel lugs, so I could change the tire if needed. :?

I've got one of those cheapie fold up tool kits, a bag with some zip ties, wire, tape, a couple posi lock connectors, a tube of silicone gasket maker a quart of oil and a gallon of water. There is an old clutch cable and fuel pump under my spare tire. I don't think I've used anything in my car, but have donated a few zip ties and some gasket maker to other Fiats in need, (a buddy's coil wire kept popping off last summer, zip tie to the rescue)! There is a copy of Brad's fuel injection guide in the tool kit. Also have AAA plus, but have never used it on the Fiat or anything else,(knock on wood). We've made several 400-500 trips with no issues.
