Another Muffler Thread

I am looking at mufflers and there are 35 round Magnaflow mufflers with a 2.25" inlet alone. They all have varying tip styles and tip lengths as well as muffler lengths. What is the proper size of the muffler? How do you know what to buy? How do you know what sounds good? Where do I start?

I have a stock 1600 with a long pipe header. I plan on replacing the full exhaust system from the header back. I have picked out a resonator but there are way too many choices in mufflers. Help!

just don't get too big of a can or too big of a pipe size, or it will drone and you may even loose some performance. . people put these high flow V8 mufflers on small 4 banger engines, and the results usually are not that great. you do not need 2 1/4 pipe on a 1600 CC engine.

I'd use 2" on a 1600. Most all perf muffs have a 2 1/4 inlet though

I installed Auto Ricambi's stock end pipe with muffler and mid pipe with resonator on my 2L and it sounds great.

The different sizes are mostly there so they fit different applications with different amount of space under the car.
In general the larger the muffler the more it quiets the exhaust. You also want a muffler you can see through for good flow.
As others said, there is no reason you'd need anything over 2".

This is what I am finding. This is why I was thinking 2.25'. How do I transition form 2' to 2.25" on the muffler? Should I find a center resonator with a 2" inlet? It seems that most of these are 2.25" as well.

costom muffler shops have a pipe strecher and expander you canh bring it to them amd have the fit it
then bring it home and install it

there are plenty of excellent mufflers that run 2 inch in and outs on them.

not a lot of room on the rear of a 124. this one might fit better. i run this on an old Alfa and love the sound. flows like a straight pipe.

I like the Hushpower, I was using those on the X1/9 system we build but the prices just went way too high. It does have a good sound. I've found a really good alternative to those $200 muffs that I'm using on our perf systems now.

Thrush welded, 2 chamber muffs, sound good on my rover, probably would sound great on a spider. I run a 2.25 thrush glasspack, straight through unit, i like the sound, so do most people i have asked.
