Does the idea of building an airbox around twin IDF's, and using an exhaust driven Turbo to feed the air box make any sense? Anyone ever done it?

Yes it could be done, but it would be a pain to get right! You'd be better off selling your IDFs and putting the money towards EFI and turbo.THEFIAT wrote:Does the idea of building an airbox around twin IDF's, and using an exhaust driven Turbo to feed the air box make any sense? You will need different carburetors for a blow through turbo as you will have no vacuum once the turbo builds boost. It is widely agreed within the turbo community that blow through setups are a waste of time. They tend to produce excessive lag and have many highly rich and lean areas in the power band. A few auto makers offered these over the years, the most successful being the Maserati Bi-Turbo. And by successful, I mean it lasted long enough for it to become a joke.
If you are really interested in a turbo, you should start by investing in a properly developed electronic fuel injection that can compensate for the manifold pressure along with the normal vacuum. In other words, something more advanced then the OEM units provided by Fiat and Legend Industries.

Re: Adding Turbo to a Dual Weber IDF's ?
There was a guy in the early 80's in Ohio who tried this. He didn't pressurize the air box, but had individual runners going from the turbo/intercooler straight into the individual bores of the IDFs. As you might imagine, it never got close to working. You can make a draw through set up work, but as stonebike says, the best money for a turbo motor is a good FI system, for sure.

Thanks to all!
My real strength, is in knowing my weakness.
And on this topic, I have show my ignorance.
Let's move on to... RAM AIR.
(Meaning, efficiently designed hood scoop to raise the incoming pressure to naturally aspirated carbs.)
Talk among yourselves. I'll Listen.
