Dry sump

Post by madoc05 »

I have a F production 1.8l 124 spider, last October I spun a bearing and pushed a rod out the side of the block. After a lot of procrastination I finally tackled the rebuild. About a week ago I decided to go with a dry sump from a big wing wet sump, my problem is that I don't know where to place the tank. The only tank that has a chance of fitting is 14"x 6.5" tank from pegusus auto racing. Does anybody have any experince with dry sumps, where do you mount the?

Marc,

Sorry to hear about the blown rod. Did you have an accusump or just the big wing pan? Plus there is no need for remote double filter system, plus all that extra lines did not help the stock pump.
I run the stock pan, simple spin on cooler adapter with a 3qt accusump plumbed directly into the oil gallery on the right side of the engine. Also it is a good idea to modify the cam boxes by drilling a 1/2" hole in the drain back port to lower the oil level. They can hold alot of oil when you are always at +5k rpm.

A dry sump would be great and yes most guys try to put the oil tank as low a they can and in the passenger compartment, but i have never seen one in a 124spider and most of us don't think it is needed.

One a side note are you still running the single carb? SCCA now allows you to run 32mm chokes with twin 40 idfs. I switched to these last summer and it makes a big differenc, not only in perfromance but the sound also.

I wasnt running an accusump at the time but planned on adding one with the new engine, I think the bearing went because the rod bolt stretched on the 4th cylinder. It went big time 4 holes in the block and broke the starter off the bellhousing, fortunately I have a spare 131 transmission. The whole dry sump came about when I was at the local engine and machine shop, I found a bracket for a dry sump in my inventory, and have a 3 stage pump so I figured I might as well look into it. I wasn't a big fan of putting the tank in the driver compartment because that is a lot of hot oil very close to the driver, but if I go ahead with it maybe I'll make some sort of compartment for it in the passanger foot well.

I've looked into the dual 40's I haven't made up my mind if im going to do that now or wait a bit, my plan was to get the engine back together and dyno it and see where im at.

How do you like the MSD, I just switched to a 6al from a crane fireball. I wish I had some video from last year my camera only likes to work in my driveway and on grid.

The MSD works great, no issues and love the rev limiter (currently set at 7600 rpm). That video was shot with the HD GoPro camera and was the first time i used it. I wish they had a remote start/stop button as I can't reach it from my seat.

Daniel,

Yes, I have a set of rain tires, but it takes me about 15 min to change them, (I am the pit crew also) but that day it started to rain 10 mins before grid, then stopped. Not enough time for me to change but alot of other guys did, but running with full slicks on a wet track is different than running with slicks in a heavy rain (not something you want to do). Its puddles and light to heavy rain that is the issue with slicks. Running rain tires in the dry or drying track will melt the track right off in just a few laps.

Take a look at this, this is what happens when you get cought out in heavy rain

I got caught in a decent rain at nelson last year with slicks on, very interesting to say the least. Lap times like 50 sec slower, about twice what I was lapping in the dry.

I remember something like that happening a few years ago at a grand am race, I'm not sure if it was VIR or Barber but about half the field wrecked in the esses.
