I'm not sure that this pot needed stirring but I did read the whole thing... I'm also of the general opinion that I'm all for any form of automotive fun, even if it makes the owner/driver look like a douche.

Sliding the ass end of my best friend's Spider around the corners downtown was what made me fall in love with the car and buy it from him. Most of my prior experience with RWD was with air cooled vws, and 356 Porsches. They have their charms, and can be made to be very fast around the turns, but they got nothin' on the 124 engine/chassis for the kind of driving that I found fun.

I love drifting my Spider. I've taken it to the back corners of the mall parking lot at night and drifted circles around the light posts for several minutes before avoiding the onset of mall cops. Other than them, no one sees me do it because I look like an idiot when I do it. Everyone who does it in unsanctioned places looks irresponsible when they drift their car, just as those who drag race down residential streets going 70 MPH look irresponsible.

You might say drifting is like  porn  : it's not dirty until someone else catches you looking at it. Might I suggest that drifting is the porn of the automotive enthusiast; it's raw, eye catching, easy to understand, and employs something that is inherent in all of us. Do we all enjoy porn together? No. This might explain why so many find drift exhibitions and those participating in them distasteful.

Larry Flynt insisted that we cannot legislate taste, and I agree. I likely wouldn't show up to a drift car exhibition, but any neighbor who's building a drift Fiat can borrow my carb sync tool anytime, just like I won't go cruising for prostitutes, but a self respecting transvestite hooker can borrow my sequin mini skirt if she's in a pinch 8).

Great simile. I don't mind coming out of the closet on drifting. I think it's fun!

My friend Frank just went out here to Irwindale last week for a drift event and showed me some
video footage he took on his cell phone, looked kind of cool and he has been there before i didn't
ask what he paid to get in but if it was cheap maybe i would go since I've never been to one .
He is a big NASCAR and Drag race fan (been to many Events) over the years and i was surpised
when he told me he went the first time , he seems to like it .

I thought of this thread last night when I found this bit of Fiat drift action:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvV0gG3_S3c

(The Spanish Seat car company built the 124 Sedan and Coupe under license from Fiat)

As per my above post, this feels a bit like trading porn, but I'm sure ya'll won't mind  It seems to do quite well, and appears to be very well balanced. I'm guessing that it's got a locked/semi-locked diff and a lotta tuning... This car's chassis is 5 & 1/2 inches shorter than the 124 Spider's, but it is otherwise the same as the Spider's in stock form.

Ha! That was cool! I bet he could go faster if that rear end would just hook up. It reminds me of when I took my 72 to autocross years ago with the hard tires it's sporting now. It would hook up just in the nick of time.

I thought he was to heavy on the gas and drifting to much. How does that whole thing work? Who wins?
I used to own a car like the white one. It's a Opel Kadett C Coupe (GM) and I remodeled the car completely. I had it for 15 years and sold it when I moved to the US.
I used to drift the Fiat when ever there was a nice curve but the rear end did not like that. Now I only do it when the street is wet.
I never cared if somebody was watching, or not, as long it wasn't the police. 8)
