I did the samething to my car a few months ago and still have not gotten around to securing the panel down. On mine if you push the rear seat all the way back and recline it a lttle it actually sits right up on the panel. I can not see your photos becasue the computers here wont show them but I think I made a my panel just a little bit bigger from fron to back.

What did you do with the back wall? Any pictures of that with the top up? Looks VERY NICE -- EXCELLENT JOB!Foster48x wrote:My new rear storage shelf! I made it over the weekend out of 1/2 inch MDF and covered it with thin padding and good leather like quality vinyl. It's far from perfect but overall I'm happy with it. So, after all of that work I thought I'd pass my little creation on to the group. Enjoy!
Here's a link to the original high res drawing of the shelf with dimensions. Sorry but I didn’t dim out the speaker box.

UPDATE: Here's the dims and pics of the speaker box.

Smaller 800x600 drawing of the shelf.
Here are some pics of the shelf in and out of the car along with a rear speaker box I threw together. I ran out of good vinyl so the speaker box is covered in cheapo replacement trunk carpet. It will eventually be covered in the same vinyl as the shelf. Also, ignor the light white spots on all of the pics... It's not the interior I think my digital camera is going to the crapper.
If you need more detail on any of it let me know.

Thanks. The back wall is covered with the same trunk carpet the speaker box has on it. Here's a pic of the back wall with the top up. I turned up the brightness on the pic so it's easier to see.

Very, very NICE! Want to make me one in Tan? I'll even send you the material.
Re: Rear Seat Storage Shelf w/ Dimensions & Pics
lol. I wish I had the time but the boss (wife) is on a "build me some flower beds and a deck in the back yard" kick. I really don't feel like sleeping on the couch.

Re: Rear Seat Storage Shelf w/ Dimensions & Pics
how much does it cost for the whole project?
Re: Rear Seat Storage Shelf w/ Dimensions & Pics
tbush,
Not much if you stay away from the expensive materials. Some of it I already had but here's my best guestimate of the price.
Just material costs:
Wood was under $10. I think I recall I only bought one of the smaller "project boards". It wasn't a full 4x8 sheet. so it was probably closer to $6.
Under $5 for screws and wood glue (I already had these).
The handles were each a $1.
The hinges were around $4 for all of them.
A yard or so of the padding underneath the vinyl was only a couple of dollars.
What you cover it with is going to be the greatest cost. I covered mine with whisper vinyl which is around $18 a yard from JoAnn's fabrics so it would match the rest of the interior. I think I had a 50% off coupon at the time so it only ran me $9 a yard. If you cover it with trunk carpet it will probably be allot cheaper.
If I had to guess for all of the material it was somewhere around 30-35 dollars.
Hope that helps.

Please don't quote posts and then leave every single picture in the quote. It's poor forum etiquette. Probably poor etiquette to complain about it, too, so I'll apologize in advance.

Have you ever done one where you have the speakers in the storage box instead? so they are not so obvious? I thought about that with having a softop. wouldn't some one just love to take a knife to the top and take the speakers? I guess that i am just very not trusting to people that i don't know what they are doing

Re: Rear Seat Storage Shelf w/ Dimensions & Pics
No I haven't done one like that. I did considered putting the speakers in the shelf but wanted the storage capability instead. Modifying the shelf design to accomodate speakers would be pretty easy. If you got creative with it you could even fit the speakers and storage on the shelf.tbush wrote:Foster

Re: Rear Seat Storage Shelf w/ Dimensions & Pics
really nice - reminds me of my old Honda CRX rear compartment, which I used all the time.
I'm considering doing one up based on your plans. speaker box, too. I might make my little doors locking just for a little added security - I typically don't lock my car for fear of the old knife the top and grab. not that I ever leave anything exposed, but you know what I'm sayin'. there's not much lockable space in the glove box.
curious how this compares to the original shelf that was in the later paninfarina models (83-85). I've never seen one in person and can't seem to find a photo on the net, but have heard mention of it. Does anyone have a photo of that factory shelf?
and if someone does one up in tan, please share where you sourced your carpet or vinyl!

I have a similar seat as Fosters. With the front seats up and in normal position it not that easy to see the back. If your going to put high end speakers in I would use grills from cheaper speakers to hide them. I remove the face plate from the radio and lock it in the trunk. I dont lock my doors. The roof cost more than anything else in the car.
I have seen a few cars that had the spears mounted in the deck pointing up. I asked the owners how they liked it. the one complaint they has is that if you have to put stuff in the bar then the speakers are covered.

Rick, just want to say you have done a great job. Thanks
Re: Rear Seat Storage Shelf w/ Dimensions & Pics
Awesome idea, Rick and thanks for the pattern. I never use the back seat and don't have a glovebox so this is perfect. I used your outline and am making a couple of changes to it. I have the shelving cut out. Going to put one storage bin in the middle and mount a couple of speakers directly onto the board. I used 1" plywood since I had enough here at the house leftover from a project. Will post some pictures when it is finished. But with your sketch and pictures to follow was easy to cut out and dropped right in. THANK YOU.
