Woodworking time is a personal thing. Craftsmanship. Each piece is hand made and tailored to fit. You also choose the finish. The fiberglass dash is a large project. The console does not fit,or match, and it is a challenge to place all the gauges and switches, and correct/create the wiring. Your glove box is gone also. I have put many hours into building a fiberglas console, but kept the mold if I ever needed to make another. I should have it all put together in a few months. The whole thing is having your own Spider. And I think the dashboard in the pic is Cherry, probably solid wood, and hand carved. My favorite!

I'm with you Dave...
This would certainly be a labor of love... and for me I would love to have a custom solid wood dash that well finished and unique. More specifically, I would love to craft one!
I think I will go to the hardwoods lumber yard in Anaheim and do some window shopping next week!
before I start a project like this, I'm going to need to cost it out... do some CAD drawings... etc.. and at the same time I need to weigh a project like this against actually putting a top back on my car.. lol
or even installing some of the goodies that I already have waiting to go on the car.. hehehehe

The dash in that picture is the only one I've seen that looks better than the original setup. I love it! I think it would be hard to copy since it has a lot of curves in it. It looks like solid cherry to me.

Re: Interesting Wood Dash Panels
That is a beautiful finish for that dash. Reminds me of the interiors of a Land Rover with the cherry wood finish or burr walnut. The best thing about it, imho of course, is that is not glossy... instead it has that oiled finish to it. Very elegant.
I think that even the standard dash pieces made out of cherry or burr walnut with that matte finish would look a thousand times better that the original units.
Anyhow, the amount of love that went into making that dash really paid off. That interior looks great!

Re: Interesting Wood Dash Panels
In my opinion being born into a custom furniture business. Its simply just cherry wood. I base that on the wide open grain, color and the two opposing colors of brown and tan in the wood, not the stain. U want an educated guess on the stain color, that would be called Provisional which is a stain color. With a Satin Polyurethane finish not Lacquer. Lacquer is a terrible finish to be using in an automobile. Thats my very educated guess. But it could also be some more exotic wood that resembles cherry wood.

It could also be red mahogany. As for the color, are you talking about Provincial? That's more of a brown vs a red. I can see a lot of time in that dash.

Really nice attention to detail throughout. I would be interested to see the exterior as well.

Yes this is a great design and I plan on making a plug and mold of it along with a matching modified radio console. I'm also going to modify the center console to integrate a front (passenger side) and rear cup holder along with a leather hand brake boot. My plan is to group all of the auxiliary dials, and switches into the radio console with idiot lights and any kind of thingy I can think of that would look cool (okay to play with) no radio but integrated Ipod mount. I want to create a similar but updated look to the older XJ6 jag that if nothing else had instrument and button cool factor and really looked good sitting dead in your driveway. Not sure what to finish it with maybe carbon fiber or do a wood grain. Big job but somebody must attempt it. Wish me luck. Car should go to paint in a couple of weeks and while gone I will begin.
Re: Interesting Wood Dash Panels
I was thinking the same with one made out of carbon fiber. If you get started first. Show pic's. I'll do the same. I'm going to start making my interior soon.
Re: Interesting Wood Dash Panels
Okay Brady lets exchange pics as we go. I was thinking of integrating the shifter base into an upward curve with a slight raised top for the gages to match what that chap did with his dash. Very easy to make the plug to match the picture but the finish will make or break it. First I have have to finish my bodywork ready for paint and also get the Rota wheel inserts in production so up at 4am on the inserts then the car restoration begins at 8:30... Busy days ahead.azygoustoyou wrote:I was thinking the same with one made out of carbon fiber. If you get started first. Show pic's. I'll do the same. I'm going to start making my interior soon.

Wow.
I go into the office at 4am. And lately, don;t get home 'til after 9pm. Then I've got 4 kids (one that's gonna make me grandpa soon ) and a bathroom remodel to occupy my time.
I'm jealous of y'all who have time to work on stuff!!
