Which rear end is better?

Post by fiatS2000 »

Im finally putting the turbo motor I aquired in to my '68 and need to know what rear end to run. Should I stick with the torque tube rear end that is stock to the '68. Or should I use the rear end that came on the turbo? I also have a rear end from an automatic, would that be the better choice?

generally, the later intregal-type rear ends haven't been as strong as the early drop-out diff type. But, ratios sometimes determine which set up is best for any given situation. None of them are strong enough to hold to drag racing

I Think the Drive shaft is different lengths as well on the older vs newer
rear ends .
The Automatic Rear end is the lowest ratio 3:58 thats a good FWY
Rear end but not so great for auto cross or road racing/ canyon driving
what kind of turbo setup are you running T3 ?

Stock Legend Industries turbo set up. I got ahold of a crashed 81 turbo spider with 32k original miles.

I had a few ideas for this car, but i don't have the time or the money to follow any of them thru, so i'm just going to use the drivetrain in my '68. One of the ideas was to make a one pice fiberglass hood with fenders and get it back on the street. Another was to make it into a offroading buggy, kinda like a rally racer. I even went so far as to cut up several tube bumper that I was going to use to make a roll cage.

Sounds like you need a dune buggy ! to get it out of your system ...

yes and no. If I fill it with 4-5 quarts of oil, I can go about 3-5 miles before i run out of oil. I put the 2l that i got from the 85.5 in it, but did not change out the crossmember. I had less than 1/4" clearance between the pan and the crossmember and with the rocking of the motor under acceleration, it made a hole in the pan from all the times it hit. The motor runs perfectly fine, but does leak oil here and there; like on the exhaust side cam tower under the distributor. Luckly I noticed the hole in the pan imediately when i happened, so nothing happened to the motor.

Yes, the radiator is from a volvo. I borrowed the radiator from my '80 to test drive the turbo(It didn't come with one). http://egvistaca.tripod.com/
