Alternate Carb choices?
Alternate Carb choices?
I have spent a lot of time getting the 32ADFA to work right on my 78 only to have it screw up again this last week. I know other carbs have been used, but not sure what the options are. I don't want top replace the manifold or modify the linkage much if I don't have to although I will in I have to. What have people used?

I have a 32/36 DFEV and haven't had to do much to it. I put it on an 1800 manifold adjusted the air/fuel ratio and it worked. I bought it new and haven't had any problems with it at all. It doesn't have an incredible amount of power like duals but it works for me.

I am in the same boat I have mine perfect for about 10 minutes and just need to replace it, I ma looking at the replcement Mark has at Allison automotive. I believe it is a EMPI? I spoke to Mark he is a straight shoot so I belive it will work well......

If you haven't changed out that Carb yet, I can say with experience that the EMPI from Mark Allison is the Nuts.
Good price, easy install, and my 1980 Spider runs great now.
And yes, Mark was very helpful with information as well as getting me the things I needed shipped quickly.

I put Mark's carb on our '76, Mark even supplied and pre-installed the throttle adapter for me. The thing went on in about 10 minutes and started right up. Slight adjustment and the car starts better now than my fuel injected Miata....great product, good price, highly recommend. AND it gets rid of that horrid water choke...you use the old fast idle circuit power for the electronic choke and Mark will explain all to you on the phone as you install if needed.....

You might also try the 34adf. It should just bolt on using existing linkage. It's a bit pricy though at around $500+. Iap has a few and is having a 20% off over $500 sale so it might be a good time to buy now if you are considering it. Much less common around here as many seem to go for the less expensive 32/36. I guess the electric choke is a nice feature but I've never had problems with the water choke on my 28/32 after 94k miles.

I've got 3 used ADFA webers that were standard on Australian 131's. They've got 24 and 26mm venturies (chokes). Another option is the weber ADM, same as the ADFA but electric choke and 27, 29 venturies. They come up regularly on Ebay OZ and sell for $40 to $60 usually. The 34 DMSA was the best of the stock, single carbs. The unit has a mechanical secondary, sounds great and even runs amazing with the cold-start choke removed, even in -35C, northern alberta (I would give it one pump of gas for every 3 deg below zero and that sob would start and idle just fine. Plus it sounds great!
I loved my DMSA until I installed the sidedraught units which have much more torque however, dont idle as smoothe and also the dmsa was better when cold (my sidedraught's pop occasionally until she is warmed up (hey, it is -13c right now!).
FI is for precision automobiles, carbs are WAY more fun!

Lots of good feedback from the 32/36 carbs. I'm putting a 34 dmsa on a 1608 with a single plane manifold for the 72 if it ever gets out of the shop.
