titanium retainers
anyone seen titanium valve retainers, for a 124. im looking seeing if there are any options from other vehicles. im going to put together the spec's im unsure of the lock angle 7 or 10 degree or something alltogether different? just finished porting the head, have the valves im going to use. have a set of springs, but i want to lighten the valvetrain abit. i will change springs if necessary to accomidate the retainers.

Re: titanium retainers
I've only seen these in hard core engines. what do you need them for?

Re: titanium retainers
building a motor , unsure of the application. i have various fiats/ lancias which could use it. my 73 spider or the 76 scorpion or 82 zagato, are the front runners. 10-1 compression 2.0l ported big valve head, still deciding on the camshafts, have pretty much every grind offered. application will determine induction. 40 idf's, 60cfl on a zagato manifold with bigger injectors and a modified bmw afm, or megasquirt, with itb's but im not a programmer, so im a little scared of that. millers adjustable cam gears, crank pulleys, aluminum flywheel, ballanced and total seal rings. if it goes in the scorpion ill go with dry sump oiling. ill also have to fabricate the header for the zagato. if i choose that route, have a 124 header and a new scorpion header. this will be a track day car, which might see some street use.

Re: titanium retainers
sounds awesome, are you going to do the chevy 350 bearing mod to get higher revs? i forget where but I have seen an ITB kit for the fiat TC for sale online. It looks pretty nice.

BEEK
If you give me about a week i may have some info on these i've been looking into this as well
there are plenty of retainers to choose from so if i can match what is needed for a fiat Valve
lets say maybe off a VW or toyota then it would be a lot cheaper . Also what dry sump pump
are you planing to use ?

Re: titanium retainers
I have never used them on a Fiat motor, though I have a pretty good grasp on Ti retainers for BMWs. As a word of caution, not all Ti retainers are created equal. There is A LOT of crap out there. If you order them, make sure you get them from someone who can certify the material. Believe me, when you have $10k+ in an engine and the retainers give out with less than 5000 miles, you are not a happy camper. I went through 3 suppliers and none of them worked out so I ended up making my own. It was an interesting exercise but I think money is best spent elsewhere.
In my opinion it is not worth it. I have clients with motors that routinely turn over 9k without valve float issues with standard retainers.

Jason,
I'm with you. Does anybody actually have experience in using Ti retainers? I have heard of some horror stories. Unless it is for all out racing I'm not sure it is worth the risk.
How about E-Prod Racer? Bill what has your experience been???
Ciao

Re: titanium retainers
(titanium retainers) ive used them with success on my nascar late model engines, i was thinking of comp cams , if there was a common retainer, such as vw, bmw ect. using a stock car products dry sump pump, mainly because i have a few. working on the mockup for the drive right now, will need 2 v belt groves as well. then i can send jason my measurements , probably the pump and what i have, we will also have to talk about a mount, i have an idea, using a mount milled out of billet which will also double as the oil filter mount replacement. also im thinking about removing the core plug where the oil galley is at the front of the block, taping that and inputing the oil there, its direct to the mains. any ideas?, just capping off the oil filter housing area. contemplating buying a mill/drill/lathe machine for some small tasks, but ive never used one, wonder if an old dog can be taught ?

Re: titanium retainers
i have a set of crower rods for a 6 cyl chevrolet, 2" crank pin 5.7 length, virtualy the same as a 2.0 fiat. im going to have the sides machined for proper crank clearance, looking into chevy bearings only because i can get a better quality bearing. the pistons are the problem now. to use these rods i need a chevy wrist pin size, which is larger than a fiat. but! a lighter and stronger wrist pin than a fiat. so ordering pistons and having the wrist pin resized? or having custom pistons made?, thats where im at. but ive turned stock 2.0l bottom ends to over 8k without part failure. these parts are just much lighter, hence faster reving. and ill grind down the counter weights , polish and semi knife edge the crank. before ballancing the entire assy. itb kit 995.00 supply your own 40 idf manifold, have that. but the megasquirt programing thing scares me.Zmatt wrote:sounds awesome, are you going to do the chevy 350 bearing mod to get higher revs? i forget where but I have seen an ITB kit for the fiat TC for sale online. Re: titanium retainers
The Chevy rods are narrower than the Fiat rods, ie the bearing width is smaller. See discusion on Turbo124.

Re: titanium retainers
inline 6 chevy rods are infact wider than the fiat rods.as for bearing width im not sure, but i would think that the 6 cyl chevy rod bearing will also be wider

Re: titanium retainers
So the bearings aren't need to run over 7k? Whats the real limit on a carb TC with a stock bottom end then?
