Re: Reverse flow head
You guys are over complicating things. Has nothing to do with carbs, brake clearance or steering gear. Simply wanted to know if the head could be reverse flowed, or if it had been done. thanx for the info.
Re: Reverse flow head
it would make no sense to try and use the 8v head reversed. The 16v head allows much higher flow but the intake and exhaust are opposite of the 8v head
Re: Reverse flow head
Reversing the flow across the head will not change the direction the engine turns, its only valve timing but you would have to do something about the valves I believe the exhaust valve is smaller.

Re: Reverse flow head
Ken I realize it dosent change the direction of the engine. I figured the valves would have to be changed. So I guess it is possible, thanx.

Very cool. I've been legitimized!fiatfactory wrote: They did reverse the whole head on the block though, so the water outlet is back at the flywheel end...
If you wanted to reverse flow the conventional head, of course it could be done with camshaft timing changes, and maintain the original engine rotation direction ...
Bore spacing etc wasn't altered for the reverse flow, so the same cylinder / chamber / valve offset issues still exist... these were all corrected with the change to 16v, which has the combustion chamber centered on the bore in all four cylinders.

Re: Reverse flow head
You could simply swap inlet/exhaust manifolds, play with cam timing and ignition, then use forced induction to compensate for smaller valves on the inlet side. The bigger valves on the exhaust side would mean getting the gases out wouldn't be a problem!

Re: Reverse flow head
Been following this thread, and have been asking some of the same questions.
Wondering if I could drop a 16v Delta Integral head on top of my 1995cc 124 spider block.
If the head is essentially symetrical and centered, it would seem that swithing the locations of the exhaust and intake cams with appropriate adjustments in timing alignment; and reversing the intake and exhaust loactions would accomplish this. From what I have read, the head should bolt on directly. There would likely be some 'plumbing' required for the intake and exhaust manifolds, but that is not unheard of.
Or am I just out of my freakin' mind?
Hungry for a major power upgrade under the hood.

Re: Reverse flow head
Here's a shot of a 16-valve Integrale head on 8-valve block in a 124 BC racer, note that he firewall has had to be mofified to accept the longer head. Inlet and exhaust systems are custom made for the job. A very tidy set up.

Re: Reverse flow head
Now THAT is exactly what I am talking about; EXCEPT, reverse the flow through the head so the intake is on the LEFT and Exhaust on the RIGHT, thus REVERSING the flow across the 16v Integral head from its normal setup.
Any one done the plumbing on that one?

Re: Reverse flow head
The later model 100SIE regata had a 'reverse port' head on it, and I think many of the later 8 valve motors in some fiats and lancia

Re: Reverse flow head
After Intake and Exhaust manifolds being placed on opposite sides the Cam Timing would be the only thing that
needs to change in order to make the head reverse flow, the intake and exhaust cams are the same across
the board in every way even the pin locations . The biggest challenge is balancing the exhaust and Intake Valves
to a proper size / ratio .

Re: Reverse flow head
I would think you would also have to fill the coolant ports in the head that used to connect to the intake manifold. I don't think coolant being pumped up against the exhaust manifold flange would be very good for anything
Re: Reverse flow head
I actually saw a YouTube video on Guy Croft's site where they had actually done the swap, switching the cams, new 'plumbing' for the exhaust and intake manifolds. I have a page reference to the Croft site, but the site is down, so I can't get to it.
