More wood

Post by rlux4 »

My plastic handle on the E-brake lever got broken a while back, so I decided to give it a wooden one. Here's my first attempt

I don't have a wood lathe, so It's done with a table saw, bench belt/disc sander and a spindle sander (for the finger recesses).
I like the one Spider Point sells, but the color doesn't match anything in my car. And it's too expensive. (For me, anyway.)

And no drill press for the hole, that must be some table saw, how many fingers you got left? Nice work Ron.

Thanks Matt. I do have a drill press, but it's too small to get the handle under the bit, so I drilled it out by hand with a cordless. How many fingers left? 9-3/4. (Counting the thumbs.) :lol:

Looks mighty fine Ron. My cup holder may just need one of those to match!! I should blow the dust off of the lathe in my garage, in put it to good use.

DId you glue it on? How about shrinking and cracking, is that a concern?

Fiat88; I hadn't planned on taking orders, I just thought I'd rather try to make a wooden one than try to find a replacement plastic one. This one is my first attempt and has already been replaced. It is made of poplar and I had to reglue it because it cracked on one side during test fitting. I've made another one out of oak that is stronger, it just doesn't match the grain on my cup holder as well. Guess I'll have to make an oak cup holder. :cry:
I want to see how it holds up before I decide to make them for other people.
Zippy; It's not green wood, so it should hold up well. Only time will tell. It's a very snug fit, but now that I have it sorted out I'll use a touch of glue to hold it securely.
BTW, MNspiderman, thanks for the compliment. I've seen your work, so I consider it high praise.
The oak one;

That looks great Ron!
I have a number of odds and sods about the shop,Think I'll giver a go as well. Wondering though if a small recessed set screw in the bottom of the handle might help keep it secure. Similar to Mike's short shifter.

Narfire, once I have it to my satisfaction I will glue it. That's what the original plastic one had, and it works fine. I drilled a 3/4" hole and then sanded it to slightly larger. It's already pretty snug and doesn't spin all that easily.
I glued two pieces of 1X (3/4" stock) together, then cut it to about 1-1/8"X1-1/4", shaved the corners at 45° with the table saw, and then sanded it round. It's taller than it is wide so I could shape the finger recesses in with a 1" spindle sander. Harbor Frieght has a kit of different sized spindle sanders for under $20 if you don't have one.
