Custom fenders or not?

Post by azygoustoyou »

Here's what I got. As we all know, my car isn't stock with the corvette tail lights. I was thinking of making the fenders on the car a little lower and wider. Here's what I got. I would be adding steel fenders to the existing fenders and welding them on. Here's some pic's of before and after. This would give the car a lower look and wider stance. I need your opinions of what you think and of any problems you may see with it. Thanks
Just to clarify, this car has no engine in it and is sitting high. My car would have 15" Rotas with IAP lowering springs.
After installing this prototype. It would be 2" lower than stock at the top. It would also be wider as you can see in the bottom pic's.

I like it with the lowering springs. You also need some wide tires or different offset wheels for them to stick out.

I would be afraid that if I was to put a wider wheel than the Rotas. It would rub. Anyways my Rotas are brand new. I'm not using the wheels in the pic.

Hey Brady,
Don't mess with Ralph! You know what happened to the last guy that did  I don't think he likes the idea. I think they look fine stock. But to each his own. :)

I think it could look cool, when filled with some decent meats. That's a sweet ride Meangreen, I really wish we had a "members' garage" section where everyone could post pics of their rides.

Thanks, I appreciate the compliment. I think my style may not appeal to fiat purests but it fits my personality. It has come a long way but still some more to do.

I like the idea, I've been doing plenty of research on the web and in magazines for my project, one of the things I have been looking for was ideas on fender flares. I have seen plenty for sale but I haven't seen many pictures of them on finishes street cars. I like your idea but I may even want more of the fender to stick out.
I saw on you tube once a fiat superbowl strut video, I know a few members on here we're in it. There was a white spider I believe that had awesome fender flares. The person captureing the video compared it to a cobra.
If anyone knows who's car it is or wherte those fenders came from (if they aren't custom) could you let me know, ill need roomw because right now my plans include a new rear end to complement the larger engine and wider tires def wouldn't hurt.

Oh almost forgot do you have pics of this finished, any rubbing on the inner fender?

I think it all depends on the wheels. If the wheels stick out far enough to fill the fenders, it will look good. If the fenders stick out beyond the wheels substantially, it will look silly. This has always been my opinion on flared fenders. Race cars look good with ridiculous flares because they have ridiculous wheels to fill them.

EDIT: Just realized this was old... Oops.

I decided not to do it. I think the car you might be referring to is on So cal Marks web site. Allison's automotive. See if that's the white car your talking about. The owner did that himself soon after he bought the car.

Thanks for the info
Yes that is the white car I was referring to, also looks like I'm not the first to ask about the flairs on it.

Those would be awesome they are custom metal or fiberglass I take it?, could have some 15" wheels made wider to take up the room.
They should make a mold and sell fiberglass versions...

Well next weekend is when I get the car (its at my grandparents in mi) and ill be deciding what direction I take then, original, modified 2 liter or shoe horn a 5.0 in (keeping as much of the car stock as possible)

I think that's a good decision. Too much modding distracts from the overall aesthetic... Fender flaring usually being the worst offenses, imo.
