Dual Alternators

Post by jsdieter »

has anyone run dual alternators? It looks like you can put one where the smog pump is. I was thinking of running some electronics and i have read that the alternator may not be powerful enough. Any thoughts?

no need for duals, a few of us are offering high output alternator conversions

How much does that cost? It looks like a second alternator will just fit right in. Being that i am 17 i want to find the most budget friendly option.

its about 200 bucks for the 90 amp conversion. ive had alot of problems with electronics myself. ive added fuel injection, a plethora of sound equipment and a small ac inverter to charge my laptop for tuning. i have a 79 and it came with the 55amp version. i added HID headlights and different housings. HIDS only use 35 watts and they are 5 times brighter. (efficiency really gets me excited) i replaced every filament bulb with LED's. again, more light, less power. i was able to find a 65 amp alt online for dirt cheap. that was enough to run my setup

that gave me enough juice to run ALOT of stuff. and for 60 bucks, you cant beat it.

but sure man, if youre going to add some serious subwoofers or something, you could try and mount two of em. i dont see any reason why you couldnt fit two of those bad boys in there. as far as the wiring goes, you should be able to splice the black wire going into the back of your current alternator and run it to both alternators. and piggyback a length of 4 gauge wire to each alternators. i dont see why it wouldn't work. hell hook up enough of em and you could run your house!

Wow, thanks for all that great information, that upgrade to the 65 was a lot cheaper than i thought. I'm not going to put in an ridiculous system, just something that will sound good-A couple 4 inch speakers in the front, 6x9s in the rear and maybe an 8 inch woofer and an amp. Other electronics would be some fog lights and maybe a third brake light. The only thing i am worried about with dual alternators is the drag it would put on the engine.

yup... i put in 2 8 inch woofers in a custom fiberglass enclosure. had to remove the back seat though. however, its pointless... you cant keep sound IN a convertible. it all flys through the vinyl roof. invest in a good set of door speakers, and some 6x9's if you want a little more....

third brake light?!?!? where are you gonna put it?

ya thats all i was planing to do with a stereo. I need a third brake, somehow. I have almost been rear ended so many times and i thought more brighter lights would help people see me better

Due to recent budget cuts and the rising cost of electricity, gas, and oil, we have decided to turn off the light at the end of the tunnel. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Have you considered trying to make the standard brake lights brighter? LED bulbs or something along those lines? Might be easier to do and have a similar effect. Honest truth though, people who aren't paying attention pretty much aren't gonna pay attention no matter what you do. Except maybe the air horns, but the Polizia might have a thing or two to say about that idea
