Re: Bumpers or not?
Hey Curly, I like the "Ferrari California" look
I gotta think bumpers from VW Beatles and other popular cars of the era would have been tried on a Spider. You'd think that even some US compact cars would be eligible donors; parts for them are way less expensive as the restoration hobby has grown.

To Tulsa, Great Photo, I have printed out several copies(One for the fridge, one for the garage) to keep my eye on the prize, Thanks again for the post. Does any body want my old bumpers?

Re: Bumpers or not?
Don't forget that they look completely awesome! I've thought about trying some smaller bumpers on my car, but I'll probably wait until I get some more spare time to start researching it. The tube bumpers are kind of growing on me (for some reason). I think it's just unique. (for a reason probably... )Curly wrote:You could always try fabricating up your own chrome bumpers - these are from an 124 AC Coupe, they give some protection as well as somewhere to hang the turn indicators.

In this pict you can see the result after closing all the holes. In my opinion, much "sportivo", as the italian people said.
Re: Bumpers or not?
I too plan on going without the post-1974 bumpers. I will be using these headlights that have an integrated turn signal in the bottom portion of the light. They are $85.00 per light compared to the stock replacements at $92.50 from International.

Re: Bumpers or not?
im running my 77 with no bumpers and loving it i just wish i could get my hands on a set of bumperetts and a lowering spring that can drop the car significantly if anyone knows of a set please let me know
Re: Bumpers or not?
i love this look and wish i could find some cheap--
could never find a re-chromer either
i drove my spider for a week w/o bumpers and with historic tags and cops didn't blink just keep it under the speed limit.

This debate goes on inside my crazed head as well, with an '84.
I will no doubt either remove them, ro "tuck" them, as this guydid (drill a hole in the shock tubes, drain out the fluid, push them back tight into the body, and screw in a self-tapping to hold that position).

I don't know if this is typical but when I removed my bumpers the reduced weight raised my car about 1-2". I run 15s but it still had to be lowered a lot to acheive the stance I was looking for.wikkid wrote:This debate goes on inside my crazed head as well, with an '84.

Re: Bumpers or not?
It's true - I'd bet the late Spiders like an '84 would look weird with no bumpers if they weren't also lowered a bit.

Re: Bumpers or not?
Just in case this is the risk you take without the BIG bumpers. Granted the small bumper cars will suffer damage like this too. If I had the tube bumpers on I would have saved alot of this damaged from happening. It was last night on a dark road when a pack of dogs came out of no where in the desert on my way to moms for Thanksgiving. It was a 50 lb Doberman that was fatal. Too bad it seems like a stray as there was no collar on it.

Re: Bumpers or not?
Bummer. Looks all cosmetic, but you've put a lot of work into that car, with the custom lower grille, etc. Hope you can get it fixed without too much difficulty.
