Abarth bumpers on the CHEAP

Post by SLOSpider »

Ok so I ordered some rubber bumpers off another car to see about fitment and here is what I got so far:

They fit pretty good and even better if I wanted to mount them closer like another member is doing. I just stuck them in the exsisting holes with some washers to check them out. They can be lowered a bit but would need to drill new holes. The bottom has a little bit of a gap but easily filled with black silicone, weatherstipping, rubber, what every suites your fancy. I have another set for the rear but have not removed the bumper yet.

The right side is off due to some body damage there I need to address. I may end up using them as untill I can figure out my split front and rear bumper mock up. For $60.00 its WAY cheaper then the alternative!

Oh whats that? what are they off of???? Do I dare tell, I know that someone already knows as its where I got the idea to try them out. So post up your guesses...

Ok Ok, so impatiencent :P They are off a 1973-1974 Porsche 914 rear bumper guards #914-605-063-10 for the left and the right Ill have to check but from VW parts experience its probably 914-605-064-10. I have a set of the fronts but dont fit as nice as the rears. They may work better for the rear but I have 3/4 tank of gas and did not want to finish taking out the tank yet.

I need to get the shock towers fixed before I can drive her though. Im really wanting to make a split front crome bumper for her so I will probably end up selling these as soon as I get that squared away.

If you are looking for some I ended up buying the rear bumper but had him ship me just the guards.

Here is one like it you can keep your eyes peeled for:

Pros
1) They're cheaper than the after market abarth blocks
2) They're probably made of a denser rubber than the after market items
3) They cover the whole hole left from the removal of the shock tubes

Cons
1) Mounting the blocks without drilling holes in the panels. You don't want these rattling loose and falling off. Looks as though you can weld up a 'T' section between the mounting studs and to the existing bumper shock mounts
2) They stick out so far, they look like a pair of erect nipples  . Appropriate for the cooler climates.

Question
1) Can they be re-profiled? ie, is the rubber material at least 1/2 way down.

I dont know if they can be re profiled but I would assume so as they seem to be solid rubber.....I just changed the cars name from Sophie to Madonna ... much easier!

Thinking about reshaping these. Anyone have any experience on cutting and shaping rubber?
