Top and Frame replacement

Post by dadandson »

Looking at our top, the fabric is coming off the front bow, and this bow looks a rusty. Will we need a new one, or is there something that can be done? We are going to order a new top, but wanted to see if we also needed a new bow. The latches and frame are in good shape otherwise. Any comments or suggestions are appreciated.

all the tops i've seen generally have some rust on the front bow. sometimes it is severe enough to need replacing, sometimes it is mild and can be salvaged.

new replacements are PRICEY. look to someone parting out a similar top (note the difference in styles happen at 78-79) and see if you can find an acceptable used part.

IMO, the area that needs to be structurally solid are where the clasps fasten and where the side wire fastens. if your rust is severe in either of these two areas, you might wanna consider replacement.

Thanks Mike. It's structurally sound, I was just curious if the new top has fabric to completely cover it, or does the installer just use another piece of fabric?

The top will wrap around the top and front of the bow, but you will need some black vinyl to cover the interior area where the latches and handle are. Fabric store and some contact cement and you are good to go.

ohh... yeah. what mark says. of course, if you are not changing the color of your top, that extra piece of vinyl could easily be cut from your old top. BTDT
