Rick, this kinda like the mystery tool in the woodworking trade mags. I have torn down and re-built my car once and partially the second time, doing a 72 at the moment, and I have no idea what this is for

I can't tell hoe big it is, but it looks a lot like the factory wrap that went over the wiper motor on the 124 coupes. The motor is exposed on these cars.
That is the ultra rare and most coveted "battery boot" When at concourse events, and the trunk is propped open, that item is snapped over the battery cover to spruce it up.
To me it looks like some kind of boot (foot kind) gaiters. The thing that goes over you boot and pant legs for when your hiking on wet grass. Since it appears to be leather maybe its a knee to ankle motorcycle chap or to prevent snake bites while hiking. Do you have 2? Does it fit around your calf?
