Im getting a dash cap cover but wanted to fill my cracks.. I tried silicone which shrinks in the heat.. doesnt work.
bondo works very very well.. Ill put some picks up soon.. it fills the crack and even flexes with the dash without cracking.. Im shocked. Im going to put another very thin coat on the cracks and sand lightly.. Made my dash look new again.. god only knows how long this will last. Its ready for a dash cap now but may not need one.
using bondo to fix those dash cracks
Re: using bondo to fix those dash cracks
I was thinking about doing something simmilar with my ripped up center console then just painting over it But I'm not too sure about how that would look once done or how long it will hold up.. Post up some pictures if you get a chance, I'd like to see the dash and I'm sure others would too.
Re: using bondo to fix those dash cracks
This guy did something similar to what your doing with the bondo then he sprayed it with bed liner. Doesn't look too bad.
I almost considered doing it but decided to cap everything.

I think it looks really good. Why don't you try it that way?

Re: using bondo to fix those dash cracks
I did that fix about 2 years ago, but skimped on the materials and it came back to bite me. I used the expanding foam in a can to fill the deep areas, then put bondo over it and feathered it onto the adjacent existing surfaces. Sprayed the whole thing with bed liner then with vinyl paint. It looked awesome for about 3-4 months, then hairline cracks developed. Now the cracks are about 1/16" wide, but I have a dash mat so they are mostly covered. I found that special sealant but figured it was too expensive or that my idea would work.
Funny that I write specifications for construction projects that detail specific products to be used, and make contractors strictly adhere to them, not only the product, but the installation instructions. Yet I don't listen when someone else specifies a specific product. Live and learn.

Re: using bondo to fix those dash cracks
Can someone see exactly what the products are called to do this. The hard one to read is medium urethane adhesive by evercoat. What is the blue and white container in the pic? I can see the others. Vinyl paint and Duplicolor bed liner.
Thanks

Re: using bondo to fix those dash cracks
I have some pics up shortly.. i keep getting home and its dark at night no damm sunshine.
the bondo seems to seep sideways after you push it in there giving a backbone to the dashboard. I havent painted it yet and i think it looks pretty awesome already. Something about that 1 inch wide crack being gone is quite delightful. Ill get pics before and after the paint.. Im just going to use several coats of vinyl paint.. i hope it sticks to the bondo well. I must say this much sanding on your dashboard is tiresome and takes a few weeks if you have multiple cracks and put too much bondo on like me. duhh pics coming soon.

im going to order the dash cap from ebay. but at least i know it looks good underneath and itll hold the cap well. those cracks pucker upwards..
Re: using bondo to fix those dash cracks
Yea but if you skimp on the materials to repair a dash its not going to colapse and kill everyone inside.manoa matt wrote: Funny that I write specifications for construction projects that detail specific products to be used, and make contractors strictly adhere to them, not only the product, but the installation instructions. Didn't your dash come out right? Why are you going to use a dash cover?
Re: using bondo to fix those dash cracks
I may be wrong but the blue and white can (XX330 label) is a brand of grease and wax remover. I'm sure any quality brand of grease and wax remover would work.
