Rear Seat Storage Shelf w/ Dimensions & Pics
Rear Seat Storage Shelf w/ Dimensions & Pics
My new rear storage shelf! I made it over the weekend out of 1/2 inch MDF and covered it with thin padding and good leather like quality vinyl. It's far from perfect but overall I'm happy with it. So, after all of that work I thought I'd pass my little creation on to the group. Enjoy!
Here's a link to the original high res drawing of the shelf with dimensions. Sorry but I didn’t dim out the speaker box.

UPDATE: Here's the dims and pics of the speaker box.

Smaller 800x600 drawing of the shelf.
Here are some pics of the shelf in and out of the car along with a rear speaker box I threw together. I ran out of good vinyl so the speaker box is covered in cheapo replacement trunk carpet. It will eventually be covered in the same vinyl as the shelf. Also, ignor the light white spots on all of the pics... It's not the interior I think my digital camera is going to the crapper.
If you need more detail on any of it let me know.
Rick

very nice and very useful seeing as how storage is one things the spider lacks.

Awesome Job, that looks great. Once the kids get bigger. I think I'll do the same.

What is the MDF you used? Thanks for any more info.

George, I used a 1/2 sheet of smooth MDF from Home Depot. Not sure, its technical name may be something other than MDF but it looks like it. You can get it in full 4'x8' sheets or smaller 3'x4' sheets. I used one of the smaller $8 sheets for this project.armchairmechanic wrote:What is the MDF you used? Thanks for any more info.

Fiat88,
Right now I'm lucky to get my own projects done.

I really like the way this looks. I know it seems stupid but how are you attaching the shelf and speaker box?
Re: Rear Seat Storage Shelf w/ Dimensions & Pics
jsdieter,
The speaker box is held in place by friction between the seat belt retractors. Its not attached to the shelf so it can be easily removed.
The shelf (which has yet to be secured to the car) will be held in place by two small brackets on the inside front face of the shelf. Kind of hard to explain but the inside shelf face and the back side of the hump line up perfectly so that one end of a bracket can be drilled into the shelf and one into the cars body.
I also plan on adding two small L brackets to the back of the shelf. They will be secured to the underside of the shelf and then drilled into the back panel of the car body. I'll post pics of it when I finally get around to securing it.
