Burl wood dash
Burl wood dash
Does anyone know where or how you can obtain the burl wood look for their dash? I've come across really nice pictures of burl dashes but no information on how to get them done or do it yourself. Thanks

You'll have to source some burl veneer since finding a piece of burl wood with no holes in it is hard. This place looks promising: http://oakwoodveneer.com/samples/samples4.html

I've heard of good results with products like this:
http://www.emblempros.com/burl_wood
but I've never seen them 1st hand.

I am not sure where you live but check to see if there is a Woodcrafter store near you. They care veener and 1/8 and 1/4 thick planks of all different kinds of wood that are perfect size for making a dash.
I just picked up some African Paduak wood from them. There website is http://www.woodcraft.com

Nice, there is one about an hour away from me. What did they charge for the Paduak and how much can you do with what you got?
Re: Burl wood dash
The first pack i got was about $15 which was 1/4 thick and had 2 pieces 6inches by 24. Which is enough to do everything but around the gear shifter. I messed up on the glove box door so I had to buy another pack. For some reason the 1/8 thick pack was a few dollars more. I think I am just going to cut a piece and glue it to the front of the original glove box panel.
Bring messurments and tape messure with you. I forgot to do that. The panels in the packs are not cut to perfect size and the gear shift panel is a little wider than the others. One panel I got might work

Be careful of this procedure - the latch is sensitive to the thickness of the glovebox door and if you change that thickness you might find that you cannot reinstall your latch.amsiegel wrote: I think I am just going to cut a piece and glue it to the front of the original glove box panel.

How do you plan to finish the veneer?

I am almost done with New Dash 1.0. I am going to have to do a version 2.0 later one. When I drilled the hole for the speedometer I was little off to the right side. Everything fits but the speedo and the middle gauge are almost touching. My buddy not to worry about it no one will notice. The problem is I know its wrong and will drive me crazy. Plus I think in the next one I am going to glue the Paduk wood to a thin sheet off plywood to make it stronger. The gauge area and the to small strips in the middle are done. I have to put the final coat on glove box tonight. Its going to be a little while till I get to the gear shift panel. Photos soon.azygoustoyou wrote:Looking forward to some pics
I was thinking about that. I can get my hands on other cylinders that might work if I can not get original to work. I have not drilled the lock hole yet. I am thinking of modifing a magnetic baby proof lock and not not use a regualr lock. This way no hole or lock on the glove box panel. Something like this but thinking a different model. http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.js ... I am not sure if this would really be called veneer. The gauge area is 1/4 inch thick. The center strips and part over glove box is 1/8 thick. Real veneer is really thin (like paper). I am finishing the wood with General Finishes Exterior 450 Semi-Gloss Finish. That I picked up when bought the wood. I goes on good but I thinking I should have just picked up a small can of the minwax Polyurethane from home depot. The stuff I bought works good but I really did not need aquart can and I have used the minwax before and you can really build the coats up to get a thick finsihHow do you plan to finish the veneer?

Re: Burl wood dash
I bought a 1" thick solid slab of Paduak, 10" wide, about 5' long (plus a 1/4" pc to redo the "radio console" area).
Plenty, with some nice scraps for future fun projects. Was about $45 if I recall right... plus $15 for the 1/4"

Due to recent budget cuts and the rising cost of electricity, gas, and oil, we have decided to turn off the light at the end of the tunnel. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Re: Burl wood dash
I went shopping last week to find a real burl veneer and had no luck finding a perfect piece at the right price. During my travels I came across those new plastic laminates. Well, I found a beautiful looking burl walnut that is colored slightly towards a dark cherry. After looking at my friends high end Merc which uses fake burl with a very high gloss I decided to get a sheet and give it a go. So for fifty bucks for a 4x8 I got it home. Doing a quick test with an easy flow clear epoxy resin it looks amazing. So in the next few weeks I will build a custom dash and updated center console with cup holders. Will post pics when ZI have it completed.
