One Final Fiasco

For those of you who have followed the soap opera that is my car, you will be sad to learn that this morning was the series finale. Let me set everyone's mind at ease - no one was injured in any way. The speeds involved were all pretty slow. Also, the accident was clearly someone else's fault. Bummer for them, but at least I won't have an at-fault accident going on my record.

Of course the downside is that the car is totaled, and now I have to fight with Allstate to try to get a few measly dollars out of them. I may try to buy it back from them as well, so I can sell (or reuse??) the parts, but we'll leave that decision for another day.

Glad you are alright! I'm surprised to see that driver's side fender gone. I would expect a fibreglass one to tear away like that, but it is hard to imagine the forces involved with yours. And to see the shock coming out on the other side... Yikes! Must have been a heck of a crash. I hope you get the money you need for a good replacement.

Oh no, sorry to see this! Not a good way to start the day, glad you are OK. What hit you?

SUV pulled out from a parking lot into my lane. I locked the brakes and skidded into the SUV - my right front tire hit her moving left rear tire which tossed the Spider about 3 feet in the air and 8 feet to the left where I landed in the driver's side door of another car that was sitting in the turn lane waiting to turn into the parking lot.

No one hurt in any of the cars. Barely a scratch on the SUV that caused the whole thing. Just a scuff above the left rear wheel well. The sedan I landed on was able to drive off with no trouble, but took a good bit of damage down the side of the car.

Bummer! Glad nobody was hurt. I can't open the pictures (firewall at work), but I gather it is pretty bad. You may be using those 'spare 76 body parts earlier than planned! I hope the insurance companies give you a comfort zone to put something together that will work. Keep us posted.

I'm glad to hear nobody was hurt but, it really sucks about your car. UGH, I have lost cars like this in the past. It really sucks that nobody (INSURANCE \ COURT WISE) understands the time and effort put into a project. Therefor, the true value is always overlooked. I don't mean to pour salt in your wound but anybody else here might benefit from what I have to say on the subject. So, here it goes. I was able to secure a pre determined total value insurance for my 79 Spider. Right now, it is valued and insurred for $3,500.00. Which means that at the time of ANY unfortunate event my spider is non recoverable, I will get $3,500.00 and not a penny less. I can have this policy increased or decreased at any time. Providing I give reasonable reason and the insurance company has an opportunity to check the car over. They will need lots of pictures on file as well. THE BEST PART is that I's part of our overall policy (wife and I) and is really inexpensive. Right now I have full coverage with un-insurred motorist and the policy runs me $135.00 annually. AND YES, that is for unlimited milage. Anyway, it just food for thought as this is the second time I've seen sombody on here loose their car and have to fight the insurance companies.

Glad you were unhurt. Sorry to see the Spider go but at least it saved you the best it could.

I bet the SUV driver was: "like, I couldn't see that little tiny car coming! He must have been speeding to be up on me so fast..."

Hopefully there will be another Fiasco in your future. Try and buy back the car to get some of your good work back and then part it out to yourself and the rest of us before it goes off to Pickapart.

Sorry to hear and to see the damage. The diagram was well drawn. I did that for many years as a traffic cop. It looks clear who is at fault. Some cops dont like dealing with accidents so they dont put much effort into the report thinking that the insurance companies figure it out anyway. That last picture was sort of sad seeing the Spider being hauled up on to the wrecker with the sun settng in the background. Sort of a poetic shot.

Glad to hear no one hurt. Another case to get the g--damn SUV's out the hands of those who don't know how to drive them. Totally unncessary "king of the road" pieces of crap for a majority of those who own them- yeah, really need a Tahoe to go pick up groceries. (Sorry for venting on someone else's misfortune but I too was hit by an SUV not too long ago - not in the Fiat fortunately.)

I am so glad that no people got hurt but I am just sick about the Fiasco.
After all the hard work you and all the SoCal folks put in to the poor baby. Any thoughts on what you're going to do?
