Fender question

Post by NW75spider »

Before I get myself in deep, I thought I would pose the question here. I have two '75 spiders (driver and parts). The driver has a passenger side front fender that had what looks like a fairly minor altercation with something. As it sits, a previous owner attempted a bondo fix that did not work, and the head light cannot be aimed correctly. There is also a bunch of cancer at the end of the fender closest the door.

My parts car has good fenders and is also a '75. My question is: how are the fenders attached? Are they bolted on, or welded in some fashion? I think my best bet would be to remove the damaged and cancerous fender and replace it with the good one from my parts car. How hard of a job is this going to be?

Thanks

I was afraid that would be the answer.

Now I guess I need to budget for some body work.

Look along the fenderwell and the fender and you'll see the spot welds. They can be drilled out. There are a few others a bit harder to get to along the door hinge area.

With the help of someone capable of welding the other fender on, it shouldn't be that big of a deal. You can always take the fender off a donor car first to see if you're up to the battle. If you get it off and think it is just too much work, at least you have the donor fender off for the body shop to use as a replacement part.

Good point. I will probably give that a try. I'm always up for taking things apart!
