crackle paint works well on all model years, Denise! Proper surface preparation is all that is needed, just like every other paint. You know the drill - - no grease or oil, smooth surface, plenty of ventilation and +40°F ambient temperature.
Re: aluminum dash project (help removing chrome from plastic)
why would you need a smooth surface for crackle paint? Isn't it crackle on both sides?

It's not crackle paint, but close. Here's a pic of my old Jeep Comanche I sold to my dad. He painted it with SEM bedliner. I tried to talk him out of it, but it actually looks ok. I'm not sure you could pull it off on a Spider, though.

To the original poster: I'm currently working on an aluminum dash project myself and would love to hear about your technique for cutting the metal. I have anodized aluminum panels 0.08 in. thick. PM me if you'd rather not clutter the thread up... Just curious as to what method you used (metal shears, saw, etc) to actually fashion the proper panel shape, holes, etc.
Thanks!
Thanks!

No fancy equipment here. I used a jigsaw and holesaws to rough it out, then finished the edges with a file and finally sandpaper. I think I am going to cut out a plywood backing for the glove box door, so I can attach the hinges without making holes thru the front.
